up to ten, then start over. If you lose count, you must start over at 1. the goal is to completely focus on the count, not trying to fall asleep...everything else will have to slip away if you focus on making to ten each time. I have MAJOR insomnia, and this usually works in about 20-30 minutes...should work faster for most people. If I am really really tired, it works sooner for me.
