GODDAMNIT! My dog just ate chicken bones |
|
Fuck! My garbage-gut Shar-pei dug out a chicken thigh from the trash and crunched up the whole damn thing. And the vet is closed. FUCK!

2. I hate when that happens. |
|
It happens to me occasionally With 3 dogs we have to be very sure the pantry door is closed tightly. Just watch him/her closely for distress. Most likely it will be fine, we have never had a problem.

3. My doberman mix did that last month.. |
|
Made roasted chicken.. threw the carcass in the garbage and didnt think anything of it until I woke up the next morning. There were bones EVERYWHERE. Dog is alright.. she threw up a lot that day but other than that, nothing really happened.
I'd just wait and watch.. if she starts showing signs of pain or discomfort, then I'd take her to the ER vet.

8. Thanks, I just did that |

He's crated now, resting quietly. I don't want him to run around until he's had a chance to digest.

11. Yes... bread adds bulk which can help decrease damage to the intestines |
|
In fact, one of the theories why the old "farm dog" could eat bones years ago without apparent harm (to the extent that this MAY be true) is that they had such a high fiber diet it help protect their GI tract.

7. It almost killed my Chow |
|
We adopted our female Chow from our vet when her owners surrendered her rather than pay for the surgery to repair a perforated intestine from eating chicken bones.

6. Odds are, nothing to worry about |
|
Just keep an eye on him. Worst case scenario, you'll have to go to an emergency vet, but dogs have been eating chicken/turky bones for thousands of years. Most of them are fine.

12. Putting chicken bones down the disposal will it |
|
wear out fast. If you don't mind the cost, then more power to you. We have cats, so anything like chicken bones, fish skin, etc immediately goes in a plastic grocery store bag and out to the covered garbage can in the garage.

15. Actually, I think putting chicken down it helps the performance |
|
of the disposal and I have no smelly garbage from rotting meat. Ice cubes is another thing I put down the disposal regularly to keep the blades sharp. It's been in my house for 12 years and has even eaten the occasional penny. The only time I've had a clog is when we massed produced apple pies and someone put too many peels in at once. I even grind corn cobs (they're fun to watch spin around).

17. You must have one awesome disposal |
|
We do put peels down the disposal, but shrimp skins, bones, etc all in the garbage. But it's only going to the garage, which I don't park in, so I don't really care.
I do like it when you're putting celery stalks down the disposal and they spin. :)

13. My grandmother had a disposal with mega power that never quit in decades.. |
|
Every one I've ever had-- in house or apartments must have been one of those small motor types--totally worthless and quit after a year or so.

16. Even before I had the 10 pound kitchenscrap seeker in my house |
|
I took food garbage out to the dumpster. But I live in a small place and generate so little in the way of garbage, that stuff'll start to stink long before I fill the gabage bag. Now I'm really glad I was in that habit. Stella is always interested in foody garbage.
Good Luck!

dip cotton balls...real cotton, not the other fiber...in condensed milk and feed them to the dog, as many as you can get into him. This will cushion any sharp points and edges and help move the pieces through the dog's intestine.

I canceled our plans for this evening to keep an eye on the wandering pooch. So far, he's doing okay. Thanks for the input guys, and keep your fingers crossed for us.
