Tempur-Pedic,The Sleep Number bed or another mattress entirely?
The time has come for me to get a new mattress & box spring.
With all the product out there I'm really confused about where to even start. Can some of you share your most recent bed buying experiences? Let me know if you have the Tempur-Pedic, The Sleep Number Bed, or any other kind of mattress.

I, and my back, thank you.

2. Tempur pedic is not for everyone
I think it is too hard, and you sink in too much. I have a memory foam mattress topper (they are SO cheap on overstock.com) and that gives just the right amount of softness. I highly recommend that you lie down on a tempur pedic before buying it.

4. I wouldn't want to sink in so much that I had the feeling of
trying to escape from a water bed.

7. Temper pedic
Only try one first. I got one and love it, love it, love it. I sleep a solid 8 hours, and after the first week no more back aches. Now my physical stats I stand about 5'4" and weigh in at around 110, so I don't "sink" as some others may. So check one out and then go forth, buy and get a real good nights sleep.

25. We 've had ours about 2 weeks now...
and absolutely love it!!! We've had a waterbed, traditional mattress and box springs...the Tempur Pedic is perfect for us. Hubby is 6'0 ft 180lbs and I'm 5'1 ft 118 lbs. No sinking here. :) It's different, that's for sure!

5. LOL - I was one of the ones they interviewed for their market research
before they introduced their bed! Their marketing was very 'confused' at that point. Sexy, geriatric, healthful, ultra-modern...they didn't know WHO they were marketing too. They wanted to market to everyone, but they had no focus.

Even though the screened participants opinion "mattered so much" - when I thought about it....we never had to have had, seen, or touched the bed. They only wanted to know what would INFLUENCE our decision in buying a bed - what would appeal to us to buy THAT bed.

My humble advice, you spend a third of your life on your bed - buy a good one. How do you determine what's good? I dunno that's tougher. I asked someone at a mid-high range mattress store "what bed would you want to sleep on, if you didn't have to worry about commissions, price, etc.?" He told me which one that would be. I bought that one and I got an EXCELLENT bed.

Good luck with your search. :-)

6. Tempur-Pedic has an 800 number.
Call them. I think you get to try their mattress for 30 days before you decide. They are very expensive.

10. And I think the patent they had has expired
There is this goofy guy in NE named Bob who runs hideous ads on TV (some of the WORST I have ever seen in my life, frankly), and he advertises a Bob-o-Pedic bed that he claims is the equivalent of the tempur pedic at half the price.

15. Bob apparently buys stuff from major manufacturers at a discount
...but they require that he remove the brand name. For all we know, those at that site and his could be the same. He's essentially a broker, a dealer, he doesn't make any of his own shit.

If you are up in the NE states, watch for the commercials. They are horrifically bad, cheesy, with production values so poor they could almost be mistaken for parody!

17. OMG, they are awful!!
I grew up in CT, where Bob started his stores.... OMFG. I turn the radio/TV off when they come on. They've actually improved over time, though. Now I can just turn it *down* :)

9. Depends
I like hard beds, but tempur-pedic is comfortable since it sinks according the the weight of the body part and supports evenly, nice in winter as well but in summer, keep your air-conditiong on.

12. Tempur-pedic rocks
I bought an off brand "memory foam" matress from abed.com. Three different levels of firmness, free freight shipping, 20 year warranty, never need to flip it, 2 free pillows...I could go on. Paid about $800 for a queen about 2 years ago. Best...matress...ever.

14. I just bought a latex mattress.
Edited on Sat Apr-16-05 09:20 PM by girl gone mad
I like the feel of tempur-pedic, but I read they sleep hot (won't do with Texas summers) and that they lose their memory qualities after a few years.

It's been about 1 month, and I'm really happy with the latex bed. I get hip pain and it really hurt to sleep on my old spring bed. So far, no problems with the latex.

I bought through flobeds.com. They were on the expensive side, but they have a 90 day return policy and a system that lets you pick different firmness panels which you can rearrange or exchange to suit your preferences. Also, latex is supposed to last for at least 25 years, compared to 10 for most spring mattressses.

Latex and foam beds aren't for everyone, though. Whatever you decide on, you might want to buy from a place that has a trial period.

18. My boss just bought a latex one, too
She loves it, and says it's the best bed she's ever owned. Not that that's worth much as second-hand info, but I thought I'd pass it on anyway. I've known her literally forever, so I do value her opinion on things. Beds are so subjective, though. I would go to an store, lay on some beds, ask around, read reviews online, and purchase from someplace with a 30-day refund or something similar. Good luck!

19. I hate mattress shopping
I have purchased two mattresses in my life.

The first was the El Cheapo double mattress and foundation we bought when we were engaged. It cost something like $95. We slept on that nasty-ass mattress for seven years. The last two years were no fun whatsoever.

Then my wife ordered a Sealy from somewhere. It's okay.

When you cut through all the BS, there are basically three major brands of mattress out there--Sealy, Serta and Simmons. If you get one of those three you'll be fine.

Or does every town have a mattress store with crazy homemade commercials. Like in Anchorage it's the "Mattress Ranch" and the commercials are an old guy dancing.

At first I thought maybe I over spent, but now I see it's worth every penny. The wife and I both have back problems and it helped us a whole lot. I actually look forward to it. Before it was a dread to know that pain was on the way when I got up in the morning. That is all history now because it don't hurt when I get up anymore.

The wife also sleeps a whole lot better too. Before she would toss and turn all night but not no more. This now is a couple of happy campers because of it.

On edit: btw it was that Tempur-Pedic your posting about :silly:

It is great. Sleep really well on it. Plus I use their cushions on all my wheelchairs. Never had a pressure problem.
