like Australian punk?
If so, what or who?

I'm listening to the New Christs "We Got This" right now...

the Celibate Rifles are still around, they're my favorite...

Lime Spiders and Hoodoo Gurus were also excellent...

There are so many more excellent groups that produced excellent music, why so obscure?

Feedtime, anyone???

1. I took in many Hoodoo Gurus concerts...
in fact, my first live concert was a Hoodoo Gurus gig at the local university. I saw the Celibate Rifles once, but don't recall where. I don't know what you'd define as punk, but some other great Australian bands from that era:

The Saints
The Church
The Riptides
The Sunnyboys
The Models

2. to me punk is more an attitude than a sound
for example I liked the Triffids but they were nowhere near a punk band in sound....Or say the Vindaloonies, with an accordion!

The Sunnyboys were great! I have several 45s by them...as well as the Moffs who were kinda mellow psychedilia...I suppose they just got caught up in the time frame...

The first Saints albums are classics! I even think they predate the Radio Birdman lps...which I think define Australian punk...
I loved the early Died Pretty, Screaming Tribesmen, and Scientists...

As far as them being punk, well the Stranglers came about about the same time as the sex Pistols and Clash, but would you consider them punk?

It's hard to categorize so I tend to refrain from doing so...

3. The Triffids were good...
but I tend to keep to a fairly tight definition of punk, which wouldn't include the likes of the Stranglers. I tend to think that very few genuine punk acts ever gained mainstream notoriety. The Sex Pistols and Dead Kennedys would fit in my definition, but I really can't think of any others because it wasn't really a genre that I was into.

4. I like all kinds of music myself...
Right now I'm listening to a really challenging atonal dirge that's titled "Meet the Press"...from time to time I can make out some lyrics like "Bolton...Rice"...seems to be some sort of composition honoring the United Nations...

5. Celibate Rifles
Is one of my all time favorite bands. Been close to 20 years since I started listening to them and I'm still turning people onto them. Also the song Rainforest pretty much singlehandedly turned me into an environmentalist treehugger.

Aspirations by X is up there on my short list of all time favorite albums too.
