God, I'm embarrassed to be an American a lot of the time now...
We were driving home yesterday after shopping a bit and seeing a movie, when I saw the most ignorant bumper sticker on the back of this SUV. It had two of those little stick figures you see on bathroom signs that stand for a man and a woman. It said (Man)+(Woman)=Marriage. I wanted to barf. Why do these people think we give a shit what they think about our private lives? It just pisses me off. It just makes me realize how embarrassed I am by most of my fellow Americans, and how embarrassed I am now to be an American. This country used to stand for so many great things. But it's all gone. Makes me sad.

1. Cool. I encourage gay couples to go to their neighborhoods
and do it in the streets. If the hetero couples feel they need to speak their minds, we can do the same.

I'm eternally single and quite grotesque, otherwise I'd do the same.

2. Oh, shut up your face. You're not Grotesque.
There is someone out there for you. It's just not time for it to happen yet. Buck up, baby.

17. Oh come on. All you have to do is go to a Science Fiction Convention
and you'd have a whole herd of guys - especially if you truely were grotesque.

3. I saw a lot of these....
When we lived in Indiana. I've only seen one since moving to Connecticut. I agree, UGH. They have the right to feel that way, but I also have the right to drive exactly the speed limit in front of them and let them look at my bumper stickers, in return :)

Seriously though, that bumpersticker just asks for it. BTW of all the people who have that bumper sticker, they're breaking the law if they have god in it.

18. Thats a good question
Areas where fundemntalist protestantism are at their highest are also areas where the divorce rate is highest, meanwhile that damn Massachuetts has one of the lowest and they are one of the most Catholic states in the country.

5. I wonder if America EVER was a great country..
4 generations ago there were numerous, numerous lynchings in the South, 5 or 6 generations ago we were winding up the siezure of the American West from its indiginous inhabatants, How long did it take for women to have a right to vote and is there any real creedence to the principle of racial equality ?

I think of how we compromised ourselves in Vietnam.

Going beyond that, the expansion of an American empire into the former holdings of Spain, the siezure of Hawaii, and who knows how many coups, and right wing dictatorships supported covertly and otherwise by the US after the Second World War...has me wondering if our actions in these areanas are truely justifiable.

I think we are just a big, clumsey empire swayed at times from one stance to another under the influence of political expediency. I feel I am a voluntary expatriot who just happens to live within the US. When I go abroad, I tell people I am Canadian.

That said there are corresponding positives. It is so ironic that the founding fathers had ethical and moral principles that have made it just that much harder for theocratic despots to just take over entirely. Ever the optimist, I am aware we are in dangerous times, but feel the current trends will not ultimately prevail. History is strewn with Savaronolas. Mussolinis, Alexander the VIths, Napoleons, and Idi Amins.
Eventually they die, are deposed, or they self destruct.

Sorry for the rant, Yes I agree that Dominionists and Xtian Fundie Nitwits are annoying as they are arrogant and ingnorant. I am guessing they were always around. Again sorry for the rant. Too much coffee.

8. never really has been a great country
the principal of the country is great but the practice of it`s people sometimes rank with the worst in history. it`s a grand experiment that has many goods and many flaws but what can one expect from the only country in the world that has citizens from every country in the world. i guess that is why we are what are.

21. As Shakespere said, Every fair , from fair sometimes decline.
I can only imagine the disappointment and frustration some people in China and the former USSR feel regarding the move away from state socialism and the Marxist tennents. Its kind of like betraying the ideals the previous generations fought for - even though we know enough about Stalin and Mao to not buy too deeply into the PR.

Even Jefferson Davis was said to have reflected on the Confederacy - that if it were to have a tomb stone, the inscription might read, " Died of a Theory " .

I suppose we have a myth of a system of government that defends and encompasses certain positive assumptions about human rights and freedoms. Every now and its held to account for inherrent contradictions in behavior and motive. I still feel that to the extent the citizens are generally informed and educated, there are some limits on the abuse of power... so far. We just have not encountered our Julius Caeser yet. - but remember how he ended up, not that it brought back the Republic.

19. Great reply amber dog democrat
it is all a matter of context.

America was based on slavery and those roots are still alive today.

A great country for masters but not for anyone else that is aware.

22. I am thinking of a line from Dylan's Its Alright Ma. ....
...and so the masters make the rules.
for the wise men and the fools.
I have nothing more - to live up to.

Ever read Carlos Fuentes The Life and Death of Artemeo Cruz?
It neatly sums up your obsevation - only within the context of Mexico and the melding of wealth and political power - great story well told.

28. right, the last of the truth in media laws were abolished & NAFTA was
passed along with welfare reform and several others but the repeal of media laws were what allowed hate radio to lie long and prosper.

But everyone stay focused on the figure heads like bu*sh & clinton
that's the way operatives like Roger Ails, Rupert Murdock & Jack Welsh
like it.

27. I saw the same damn bumpersticker last week.
The car was occupied, sitting outside the hospital. I wanted to walk over to the woman in the driver's seat and yell, "BIGOT!!!" at her. But it wouldn't have done any good. She'd just go into martyr mode and ponder how horribly Christians are persecuted in this society. :eyes:
