A few of the lesser known Popes in Catholic history
Edited on Wed Apr-20-05 08:30 AM by auburngrad82
Pope Cletus (76-78 AD) The first Pope from Alabama. In art he is represented by a hound dog and a shotgun. Pope Cletus died when he was burned to death while trying to deep fry a turkey.

Pope Fabian (236-250 AD) St Fabian was Pope during the era when Beachblanket Bingo was a popular church fundraiser. He is represented in art by the ducks-ass haircut and he is the patron saint of surfers.

Pope Urban I (222-230 AD) St Urban I was the first Pope from a major metropolitan area. He is represented in art by graffiti and tattoos. He was also the first Pope to wear a large gold cross which he called "blingus maximus". Pope Urban I was martyred in a drive-by plaguing which also took out 90% of his "posse" of cardinals.

Pope Linus (67-76 AD) St. Linus is represented in art by a blanket and a thumb in the mouth. He was quite timid but very intelligent. Although he was pretty progressive in his early career, St Linus later became more conservative with age and even denounced his belief in the Great Pumpkin.

There have been 255 Popes, most of which are not well-known. I hope that this will inspire you to do your own research into the history of the Popes.

3. Actually , the real Popes had far more interesting histories....
The Catholic Library has a good listing, although they left out most of the racy bits: www.newadvent.org/cathen/12272b.htm

The guys you mentioned sound more Protestant....

4. Hey, How About Pope Lucius (253-54) ?
and I never knew that there were thirty anti-popes.

If an anti-pope shook hands with a real pope, would they explode in a ball of energy?

5. And more important, did the anti-popes worship the anti-christ?
Just wondering...
