rent it. "Fail Safe". Another oddly, and frighteningly, on-target movie like "Dr. Strangelove". Walter Matthau plays a neo-con who knows the value of "getting the enemy before they get us." No matter how many people have to die. Listening to his facile explanations of the importance of "first strike" is like listening to any of the Bushite warmongers. I guess Karl Rove was a big fan. (I found the liberal senator's explanation of America "becoming that which we plan to destroy" particularly unsettling as was his description of what kind of people and life are left after the bombs.) But it's really Matthau's rhetoric which you will find way too familiar. I guess Bush's scriptwriters didn't get it that Matthau was the villain. In their world, villians are heroes. And, as we've seen, heroes are villians.
