I'm watching some Jesus Crispies go anti-catholic on public access TV |
|
Very entertaining.
The head Jesus Crispy constantly makes mention of the time when he was Catholic (which is how he was raised) and how he didn't become a Christian until he was 20.
Subtle references like, "I never had a Bible as a child, I had the Catholic Catechism...but not until I became a Christian did I have a Bible".
So annoying! Two of these guys were raised Catholic.
On the one hand, I agree with some of what he's saying (since I, too, am a reformed protestant), but on the other hand, I wish he could find a more compassionate and loving way to say it. And while I disagree much with the Catholic Church, I don't think Catholics are "not Christian" or should be condemned or are outside of God's grace.
There are legitimate ways to critique the Catholic Church, and many legitimate reasons (and legitimate reasons to criticize my own denomination, as well as all others). But these are just being rude - and part of that rudeness is their assurance that their beliefs are without need of critique, and are totally true.
That kind of arrogance is awful.

And why do I keep hearing the voice of Peter Lorre when I read the kid's lines?
And how did that kid get those 8 x 10s of a kitten with a ball of twine... and a poodle? Did he print them himself, just so he'd know who to sacrifice?

4. Well, he had lousy fucking parents, then! |

Bibles are classic First Communion/Confirmation gifts....along with a load of stupid shit you can't use. I have an engraved cup, a yellowed scapula or two, a couple of Bibles, and I think I probably tossed the greeting cards. The cards were the best, though, they often had MONEY in them. Way to bribe a kid, but hey, I appreciated it at the time!

Catholic bashers on cable access. Though we do have the "Atheist's Viewpoint." Hosted by some vacuous blond who seems determined to put the atheist movement back a hundred years through her sheer stupidity.

8. Ha ha! It's a call-in show, and one of the dumbest people ever has called |
|
in. The caller is a Catholic, and, sadly, he's very dumb and has no clue what he's saying, and the Jesus Crispies are destroying him theologically and, even more sadly, they're simply destroying by asking very easy questions which the caller can't answer ("Is the Bible the Word of God?" and "How do you know you are going to Heaven?").
The caller is doing a really, really miserable job.
He even said, "Well, I'm not trained and knowledgable like you guys about that stuff". Ouch! What an awful admission! And plays right into the hands of the guys who are saying that one of the problems with the Catholic Church is that the members don't know the Bible, they know church teaching. (and note, I say that as a product of the reformation, that church teaching is irrelevant in comparison with Scripture, just to let you, the reader, know where my bias is).

in any religion don't know near enough about their faith. I'm Catholic, but in the past I would basically just listen to the priest and agree with whatever he had to say. Recently, I've been studying the actual Catechism of the Church which helps me understand the faith better. Ignorance is definitely not bliss.

Me: Agnostic, raised catholic.
My sister switched from catholicism to an non-specific Protestant faith, where her husband randomly reads from the Bible and tries to apply it to his families situation. With no rhyme or reason. No scholarship, no knowledge of any of the cultures in the region where the book was written. Just New Testament random browsing... No context.
This is the central thing that irks me about some bible thumpers. They read a 2000 year old book, as if it were the I Ching, or some divinatory device to assist with every days activities. There is a historical context for the Bible, and by throwing off all catechism and serious bible scholarship, the meaning of the words in the Bible are highly subject to random interpretation:
Whatever cosmic ray struck my brother-in-law's higher faculties while thumbing randomly through the good news bible.
There are plenty of protestant Bible scholars who don't practice basic scholarship. I went to many years of catholic school and studied the bible alot, but never randomly, and never without a historical context.

14. I hate to say it, but they have another Catholic caller making no sense |
|
who's trying a hell of a lot harder than the previous caller, and is more knowledgable, but these guys are eating her alive.
Sad, sad commentary.
But,let's face the facts - probably the only Catholics who are watching this stupid show are the really dumb ones who have nothing better to do with their time except watch Public Access. I'm sure these guys are never gonna get a well educated, intelligent Catholic to call in because they're busy reading, or conversing with their families, or watching Seinfeld.

While they think that everyone else is fully open to critique, they refuse to acknowledge or even entertain the idea that THEY might be open to critique.
Which is to say, one of the things they denigrate the Catholics (and many others) for is one thing which they are utterly guilty of - hubris and ungodly and unscriptural and unfaithful arrogance and surety.
