How long until a kitten's ears unfold?
Edited on Wed Apr-20-05 11:17 PM by Lorien
I'm fostering this feral born kitten, who is nearly a month old now and STILL looks like a little goblin! How long does it normally take a kitten's ears to unfold? My father once had two Scottish Fold kitties, and I wonder if this guy has similar genetics.

I recall reading about a breed of cats that do not ever uncurl their ears- dat's genetics for ya! :D

17. Of these, only #3 looks like 3 wks to me, anyway.
The other guys have longer legs and stuff. My guess would be 5, 3, 6 and 6 weeks. Isn't it funny the way they grow, one body part at a time like a Hanna Barbera cartoon? Ears! Legs! Back! Neck! As if in a furry taffy pull, lol.

...on the underdeveloped side, IMO. Very cute! I've been thinking about fostering, but I'm afraid of not being able to let go.

20. What makes you let go is the next batch coming in!
I had the same kind of worry. But the group I fostered for were really good, hustled great homes and, there was always another litter needing some care. Actually, I started enjoying sending them off, healthy and with a good shot at a nice life. Out of a whole lot of 'em (I can't even think how many), there were only a couple of times when I told Doug to please take them out to the adopter's car because I could not. It worked pretty well.

9. Looks like a healthy little gargoyle to me!
Usually between 3-5 weeks. But, if there's been lots of trauma, the timeline goes out the window.

Look at those nice dry eyes and smooth coat. Whatever you're doing, it sure is working.

13. Thanks for the info!
The last time I had a bottle baby was 17 years ago-and his ears popped right up after just a week or two. This little guy looks perpetually concerned, lol!

I'm feeding him KMR milk 6X a day (I work out of my home). He seems pretty robust for a feral!

He looks terrific.

I fostered for a couple of years and only seldom had bottle babies. But I did have one that took a full two years to develop. 'Way too Ughleee to adopt out, so she stayed. She's now contender for top cat, still smaller than the others but healthy and feisty. Hope you're having fun!

he makes this little "burble" noise, then goes racing around the room at a really fast trot. My two younger cats, Oberon and Puck, are terrified of him, lol!

14. Don't the folds develop on the Scottish fold kittens?
For some reason, I have it in my head that the Scottish fold kittens actually get the fold later, but do NOT have it at birth. I have NO idea where I got that from...

Your baby is cute as can be, no matter WHAT the breed! Love those bright eyes and pretty markings!

45. This is Jackie now.
We thought she was male and had a bad eye so he was called "One-eyed Jack" . When we found out she was female She became "Jackie". The eye never did recover completely but it doesn't bother her at all.

23. Here's my gargoyle @ about 6 weeks.
She was the runt of a really sickly litter and was getting pushed out. (They all had runny eyes and bugs and fevers. Yikes.) She wasn't getting anything to eat! So, I kept her in my shirt for a few days and began to feed her. She didn't eat solid food for months! But, she's a very fine ugly little devil now.

How far do I have to drive? :bounce:

He might have some Scottish Fold in him. We have a Siamese cat whose mom was a tortie, dad is a tuxie, and littermates are tuxies. He has all the markings and the bright blue eyes. (What he doesn't have is the lithe body and the loud voice.)

That's what I thought. I can ask my vet, but you should ask yours, who can actually see the kitty. But I have to say that this is the most adorable kitten. What a sweetheart. Enjoy him. I'd never let him go.
