7. Just in case anybody doesn't know
about humping boxcars...

It refers to the process of rolling cars down a sidetrack (usually on a slight grade) in order to build a train. You roll a car down the track toward a train of other cars, and bang! It slams into the rear-most car.

If there's something breakable, or blow-up-able in the car, nitroglycerin for instance, you might not want to "hump" that car.

8. Beyond that it does not damage the car, does it?
Edited on Sat Apr-23-05 09:42 AM by amber dog democrat
I always wondered about that. We are not worried about pins not dropping or knuckles breaking when this happens?
I had no idea it may have more to do with the freight.

Thanks.

Good target ! Lined up !

11. Not really sure about that. You gotta figure
it causes some wear and tear, but how much more than normal I have no idea. Maybe some companies are forbidding the practice regardless. Beats me.

I worked for a company many moons ago that imported marble from Italy. It came as 3/4 in. slabs, on container ships, and then the containers were transferred to rail cars. Humping those cars was a real big no-no. Even so, it wasn't uncommon to receive a shattered load of marble slabs.

21. It may have something to do with the condition of the equipment too
That boxcar seems to have the end cut off right before the coupler.
I have seen DO NOT HUMP on worn equipment too.

Humping is kind of a high energy event.

I am reminded of part of a song

..." he tried to cross the coupling joints of a freight that blocked the yard. They switched a reefer off the main and humped it into Boomer's train. He fell and died beneath the iron wheels, so cold and hard.." Utah Phillips.

18. You are correct!
Here's a pic of a tank car going over the hump. The items in the tracks are called Retarders and compress the wheels to control the speed of the car.
