Who's the coolest person ever to live?
Yeah yeah yeah, Jesus, Gandhi, Elvis, Mary Magdelene, King, Sinatra, Chuck Berry, the Dalai Lama, John Lennon, Isadora, Quentin Tarentino (Wait! That's "Who THINKS he's the coolest person ever to live?"), all those guys sure. I'm still going with Reverend Al Green. Argue with me!

A few of her choicest quotes...

"Cocaine isn't habit-forming. I should know, I've been using it for years"

"I can read Shakespeare and the Bible, and I can shoot dice. Now thats what I call a liberal education"

"Its the good girls that keep diaries; the bad girls never have the time"

On her deathbed, sick with pneumonia, her last discernible words were "...codeine, bourbon...."

Edited on Sat Apr-23-05 08:01 PM by vince3
Joe said a couple years ago that "they try to say that I only won one of the fights with Ali. But if you look at Ali now, I think I won all three." No offense to Ali, or you either, of course, H2O. I just used to like boxing.

93. It was sad
how bitter Joe was. I think that he got over it, to a large extent. Ali has the same neurological disorder that his father and Howard Cosell had. Thousands of Americans deal with it. Frazier made that ugly comment to a Sports Illustrated reporter, and after he did, a number of boxing people who love both Muhammad and Joe did an intervention.

If you read Ali's beautiful book, "The Soul of a Butterfly" (2004) you find that although he deals with a serious physical ailment, his mind is 100% clear. He is a kind and gentle man. He speaks well of Joe, and apologizes for the mean-spirited things he said about Frazier when they were foes in the ring.

Did boxing add to Ali's physical problems? I don't think anyone could argue that having men like Frazier, Liston, Foreman, Shavers, and Norton hitting you is healthy. But the most common damage boxers sustain is a form of dementia praecox; it has a high comorbidity with mood disorders and substance abuse. You may be aware of Joe's fairly recent problems with DWI and physical aggression. Odd as it may sound, but he has far more of the classic symptoms of taking too many punches.

81. Lord Byron

Aristocratic, incredibly handsome, but born with a club foot, he created the concept of the 'Byronic hero' - a defiant, melancholy young man, brooding on some mysterious, unforgivable event in his past. Byron's influence on European poetry, music, novel, opera, and painting has been immense, although the poet was widely condemned on moral grounds by his contemporaries.

He was bisexual, and hinted at an incestuous relationship with his half-sister. He woke up one morning to find himself famous for "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage" and became the darling of London Society. Indebted, with an unsuccessful marriage (and child) behind him, he left England in 1816, never to return, and spent his time roaming the Continent with Percy Bysshe Shelley a band of other poet friends and lovers. He burned out early, though, dying after personally financing the Greek civil war. He was denied burial in Westminster Abbey's Poets' Corner.

84. Albert Camus.
Period. He was one cool customer.

AND his death is especially ironic...he died in a car wreck that I've heard he didn't want to take....he hated cars, he thought dying in one was the greatest of trageties...
