UPDATE on the crazed, middle-of-the-night drunken woman who threatened me.
I heard from the deputy this morning. The drunk woman dialed the wrong number. The guy she was trying to reach has a last name very close to mine. She just picked the name in the phone book that was closest to his and dialed away. Unfortunately, she reached me. Or fortunately....

The guy she was trying to reach is a convicted child molester with a thing for young girls...really young. The deputy would not tell me more, except that an investigation has been opened into the molestation of a little girl related to the woman who called and threatened me. Also, the sheriff's department had been trying to locate the guy because he never updated his address on the sex offender registry. They got the info they needed after talking to the drunk woman last night.

So, in a way, I guess it's a good thing she called me. She might not have reported the alleged molestation had the deputy not shown up on her door.

All is well at McCall acres. THANK EACH OF YOU FOR KEEPING ME COMPANY DURING A VERY SCARY ORDEAL EARLY THIS MORNING.

:loveya:

6. That's such a crazy story
Edited on Sat Apr-23-05 05:18 PM by tammywammy
Thankfully she wasn't out for you.

And also, it's a good thing that this happened (in a way) because she did report the child molestation.

I'm glad everything turned out good in the end.

10. I can see where she made the mistake in calling me.
Edited on Sat Apr-23-05 05:25 PM by Maddy McCall
The first initial of my first name is J, as is his. And our names sound very similar--Say, like Jim vs. Jen. I only have my initials listed in the phone book, on purpose, so that it's gender neutral.

Our last names are VERY similar. SAy, like Smithers vs. Smithress.

So my listing is kind of like J T Smithress, and his name is like Jim Smithers, but his name is unlisted. To add to the confusion, his address could be confused with mine. I'm going to have my phone number changed and unlisted on Monday morning, by the way. :(

I can see where she made the mistake. In her understandable anger, she found the first name in the phone book that looked REALLY similar to his, and then she dialed.

So, she wasn't out for me, and she might have let the alleged molestation slide, were it not for the deputy on her doorstep.

Yeah, it turned out fine, but it sure was a trying night for me and my son.

11. Well, at least it was an understandable mix up
We had cops show up at our door one night/early morning. My mom uses her maiden name, which isn't unsual persay, but not common. Someone had stolen a car, and the theif had the same last name. It wasn't a big deal, I just told him Latesha didn't live there, and he left.

And having an unlisted phone number will be a good thing, it's the changing of the phone number that will suck.

13. Yeah, I'm going to sit down in a sec and make a list of ALL the...
different people I'll have to call, once the number is changed. It's going to be a major pain in the ass.

Credit card companies
Utilities
friends
family
insurance companies

And the list goes on.

:grr:

17. Recently, I considered abandoning my land line for my cell.
I just might do that. The only down side is that I have directv, and it requires a land line. :(

21. That sucks
We have a phone at home, but we never answer it. That phone's primarily for the telemarketers since that Do Not Call List is worthless.

14. LOL! I just ate a huge meal of comfort food.
Delicious homemade biscuits and gravy.

I'm going outside to gather eggs and feed the animals now, and then I'm going to snuggle up with some movies tonight.

Some comedies...no dramas tonight. :D

24. Even though I slept through your ordeal....
I am so not an up in the middle of the night person, I read about it earlier and am happy for you that it was a case of a wrong number being dialed. That would have scared the bejesus out of me, and I live in Chicago...five minutes away from the local cop shop.

28. We are always here for you. That's one of the best things about DU.
Anyone who lived close enough would have raced to your door and stood guard, all night. I sure would have. And I'm good with a gun.:-)

The most important thing to come out of this, I think, is that you were probably instrumental in bringing a child molester to the police. Yikes! But the fact that you reported this crank call did it. I'm just so relieved that it was a mistake and that you and your son are safe. But I am also relieved that your actions mean that this guy is now probably off the streets. Great work and sleep well.

29. Sounds like an ending we can use.
Serendipity or some such. It's so much easier to understand the woman's rage knowing the truth about the call.

I might get tanked and do the same thing if I knew someone had molested a child. It sucks that you and your child had to spend such a tense night at home to maybe get this guy, though. Strange how people we don't even know sort of bounce off of our lives.

I hope you are both sleeping peacefully as I type.

:)
