1. Original Star Wars trilogy

Rumor has it that Lucas won't release it on DVD until after Episode III is out, at which point he will make a few more additions to Return of the Jedi to connect the movie more with the original trilogy.

Or do you mean the re-worked original Star Wars? I heard Lucas was never ging to release the true original on DVD. Which is a shame, because that's the only one I'd be interested in. I was talking to a friend of mine who has the original on Laser Disc and am planning to make a DVD of my own from it.

3. American Hot Wax

Highly fictionalized, but very entertaining, biopic of pioneering disc jockey Alan Freed, made in 1978. The cast includes both Jay Leno and Larraine Newman!

Rock and Rule, a fantasy story with a rock and roll background (soon to be available on DVD from Unearthed Films) or American Pop, following popular music from the 1930's through the late 70's seen through the eyes of one family.

American Hot Wax is the biopic of Alan Freed, the 50's radio DJ who brought Rock and Roll to the mainstream. It's a great flick.

... but it would be "Red Sky at Morning," perhaps one of the best coming of age movies made. Never on videotape, and overdue for new exposure to the last couple of recent generations, not to mention great footage of New Mexico as it was thirty years ago.

After Hours (Scorcese) is one helluva movie. It deserves a DVD edition with several voiceover commentary tracks and maybe some outtakes. Where the hell is it?

Bette Midler plays Mary (a virgin) who, nine months after a visit from "archangel" Rabbi Lorenzo Gabriel (not a virgin), gives birth to Our Lord.

Meanwhile, as she awaits the coming of Christmas (a holiday planned by the retail industry and opposed by the church), and receives visits from other archangels who give Gabriel offerings to take up to God; Joseph works on his latest invention ("it's a cross between two things -- it's a cross between a typewriter and an organ -- I call it a cross for short").

The Savior is born, and is visited by the Three Queens; well, one of the Queens -- one got sidetracked by a Black Mass, and the other was smitten with a crippled boy ("Amahl something or other -- Nitrate?"). He grows up to be a great man who saves a prostitute from death:

Woman: "This woman was caught in the very act of adultery! By our law, she should be stoned."
Jesus: "Let he who is not stoned cast the first sin."
Man: "Profound! Let's go get stoned!"

Joseph has become quite wealthy due to his latest invention ("it's a cross between a long board and a short board -- I call it a cross for short"); but all good things must come to an end, and Our Lord is crucified.

The whole beautiful story is narrated by Angel Fred, and features a Harpo Marx look/sound-alike as God.

DVD player. It just irks me. I go into the "video" store and there are less and less "videos" and more and more DVDs. At this point in time the Grumpys cannot afford a DVD player,and then we would have to get a recordable one which is Wayyyyy more expensive. I wish they would slow down a bit. Now tell me to go back to the last century where I belong. ;)

55. CyberHome DVD player for $54 at Radio Shack

It's not a fantastic one, but it plays moives with all the quality that makes VHS look so poor after time.

I had a nice Toshiba, but lightning zapped the cable into my home. Didn't hurt the TV or my computer, but it fried the cable modem and my DVD player.

49. The Keep

Michael Mann's horror movie. Set during WWII. Main characters are a bunch of German's getting picked off by something in a Keep they are inhabiting. A movie with lots of parallels.

Great lines from the movie.

German Officer (the good one): So what drives men out of the Keep on a cold raining night? Ghosts? Demons?
Caretaker: No...No ghosts here.

German Officer (the bad one): What are you!?!!!
Molesar: I come from you.

Old Language Professor: What was god thinking when he put the miracle of the human mind in one of these decaying bodies?!

59. "A World Apart" and "The Wrong Box"

The first one, an incredibly moving portrayal of a white anti-Apartheid activist in 60s South Africa (Barbara Hershey), as seen through the eyes of her teenage daughter (Jodhi May). The ending brings tears to my eyes every time I think of it.

The second, one of the best British comedies of all time. An all-star cast featuring Ralph Richardson, John Mills, Michael Caine, Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Peter Sellers, and many others, culminating with a classic hearse race (yes, I said hearse race) finale.
