I rented "Silver City" last night and everybody in the cast and crew is
absolutely outspoken against Bush and his handlers. This is such a thinly-disguised sendup of this lightweight president, and yet one of Sayles' better films, in my view. The "Making of ... " section of the DVD interviewed everybody from Darryl Hannah to Kris Kristofferson, and they universally bemoan this Administration and what it portends. I highly recommend this movie.

1. You know, I loved the idea of that film but I thought it was weak.
Don't know why other than it looked like they didn't think much about lighting and the script was way to obvious. Everything about it should have been right up my alley. Maybe I should watch it again.

If you want killer political film making, see "Downfall," one of the best ever.

2. Actually, I thought the problem WAS the Bush imitation...
Silver City would have actually been a pretty good straight political/environmental thriller, which is what most of it was. But making the gubernatorial candidate into Bush (rather than just a right-winger bought and paid for by corporate interests) meant that the few sections of the film that dealt with him came off as satire, while the rest of it was played straight.

And I'd say this was far from one of Sayles's best works...for me, it doesn't compare to Lone Star as pure film storytelling.
