Windows 2000
Ok.. finally came across a problem I cant figure out.. Could be I have little to NO experience in w2k..

My neighbor asked me to setup her wireless network.. something I've done countless times.. So I go and do the usual routine.. the w2k machine will not connect to the internet, but will contect to the network.

The xp machine is up and running no problems.. I can surf the internet and network on it.. but only browse the network on the w2k machine.

So I check the protocols.. check the routers config.. everything is inline from what I can tell. Is there something in w2k that I need to configure to be able to access the internet via the router?

I'm stumped.. or its my pregnant brain forgetting things :)

1. I had no problems
Three of my machines at home are running 2000 and they all connect. What computer has the router hooked up, the 2000 or the XP?
Is it a DSL modem?
I don't think I had to do anything special with 2000 to connect to the Internet, just set them up and connected.

7. It should work..
Maybe you might need to load the Verizon setup disc? I thought I would have to do that with SBC, but found out I didn't. The only thing I can think of right now is the browser settings.

5. Make sure that that "obtain an IP address automatically" (+DNS) is checked
and make sure the router has a DHCP server running...

I'm thinking by your msg everything is set automatically rather than 'hard' coded numbers...

6. I know that is checked...
It has a DHCP address so thats set too.. I have everything automatic, never put any numbers in it.

I've never seen it connecting to the network but not the internet before..

10. can the w2k pc ping (see) the router?
and did you check (unclear by your reply) that the router is running DHCP?

Remember - the router uses DHCP to get the information from the internet (DSL/Cable) and ALSO uses it's own DHCP server to relay setup info to the PC's.

Otherwise, you can give your router a static IP (on the lan side) and assign that IP as your gateway + DNS server on your PC after assigning it an IP address of its own - that's what I do. This latter approach wouldn't use the LAN side DHCP in case there's a problem with it...

12. as in trying to access the router?
192.168.1.1? No. But the xp machine shows up and I can browse that computers files.

When she comes home i'm going to head up and take my laptop with me to check the suggestions here.

I'm 99% sure it is DHCP..
