Senator Reid (D-NV) is MORMON?!
...aren't Mormon's (LDS) supposed to be the bastion of conservatism? I know that Sen. Reid is more towards the center than many others, but...

Wow... I just didn't know. Very surprising.

2. Yes he is.
Mormons are very conservative in the mountain west, but that is a regional thing as much as it is a religious thing. Mormons outside the west are much more diverse politically. Mo Udall was Mormon as well and he was a good Democrat.

3. This is true
While they do tend towards it, it's not a given that you're gonna be a conservative if you're a Mormon.

4. Yes, he is a Mormom.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Reid

From Wikipedia:
"Some consider Harry Reid pro-life, or an opponent of legalized abortion, because of his vote against support of Roe v. Wade in 2004. However, Reid has subsequently refused to state he wants Roe v. Wade overturned. Reid is currently also the only Democratic Mormon Senator. Four other members in the Senate are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but they are all Republican."

6. I'm going to say something nice about the Mormons I have known.
Edited on Tue Apr-26-05 04:35 PM by Maddy McCall
My best friend's mother, who had been divorced from her husband for over twenty years, married a Mormon man. A few years after their marriage, he developed terminal cancer.

The people in his church came to my best friend's mother's house and sat with the terminally ill man and even helped out financially until he passed away. Mind you, my best friend's mother never joined the Mormon church.

Even after he passed, the Mormons in the church checked on her frequently to make sure she was ok.

Additionally, I've encountered quite a few Mormons in my academic career, and they are always extremely nice people. None of them have ever tried to "witness" to me, and, to be honest, I've enjoyed their sense of humor and just hangin' out with them.

12. I've also known...
some very nice Mormons - helpful and generous folks. I've learned not to stereotype in my old age. I have some Southern Baptists clients who are also funny, generous and caring. I have never had any of them try to convert me from my Liberal outspoken self either!

9. Catholic, Protestant, Mormon, Jewish, whatever...
Politicians who actually BELIEVE and PRACTICE the moral tenets of their faith cannot possibly support the BFEE. Those who do are nothing but hypocritical posers, IMHO. Doesn't necessarily mean they have to be Dems but the current Republican party isn't engaged in anything resembling godly behavior.
