NFL so far this season...your thoughts?
Since we're close to the halfway point of the season, what's your analysis of what's been going on in the NFL? I am surprised to see two undefeated teams this deep into the season. If I'm not mistaken, Kansas City and Minnesota will face each other later in the season, so it's possible that one team will still go undefeated (though I don't think it's likely). Other surprises: My Dallas Cowboys are 5-1! I didn't expect them to do this well out of the box. I was expecting them to be one or two games better than last year so I have underestimated the power of the Tuna (Bill Parcells).

San Diego and Atlanta have only one win. Both teams had playoff aspirations. The Falcons really had a lot riding on Mike Vick's shoulders; when he went down, the whole team did. I was expecting Detroit to have a better team under Mariucci, but so far they're only a one-game winner. Philadelphia is struggling but that's what happens when you have a lot of injuries. The Jets look like they're trying to put it together, but it may be a little too late, even with Chad Pennington coming back real soon. Old age may've finally caught up with the Oldkland Raiders. Marques Tuiasosopo almost looked like a veteran on Monday night. There's even some rumblings in Raider Nation about benching Rich Gannon in favor of Tuiasosopo. And what the hell is going on in Pittsburgh?

If I had to choose right now who's going into the Super Bowl, it would come down between Minnesota in the AFC and either Kansas City or Tennessee in the AFC. Though Seattle is off to their best-ever start, I'm not quite sold on them.

If I didn't talk about your team, feel free to do so.

1. I'm pleased
The Chiefs are doing well. I love that Parcells has Dallas winning. My Pats...jeez...why they are still winning games while playing on 32 broken legs is beyond me.

Parity rules.

2. Despite the down day against the Titans...
I'm really IMPRESSED with the job John Fox and the Panthers are doing this year--they still have a two-game lead on Tampa Bay, and even beat the defending Super Bowl Champs! :D

B-)

4. I'm impressed too
I thought there would've been two losses already, to Tampa Bay and Indianapolis. While I didn't include them in the Super Bowl picture, I wouldn't be surprised if they sneaked up on a few teams in the playoffs.

3. Though they're not my team
Edited on Wed Oct-22-03 03:42 PM by Neo Progressive
Like I said in an earlier rant about the Bucs, John Gruden is coaching them to be lazy. Gruden is often considered a great coach, but he lets his teams become lazy, he did it when he was offensive coordinator of the Eagles, he did it as coach of Oakland, and he is doing it now as coach of the Bucs. When my cowboys beat the bucs this week maybe he will realize that leading after three quarters doesn't automatically lead to a victory.

10. here's my problem with spurrier
He said last season was a cold shower and he learned to check his ego at the door, but considering how piss poor his offense is doing and how he doesn't seem to want to shake things up my guess is he was lying just like everyone else in washington does...

8. NFL is interesting every year, unlike baseball.
I'm a Vikings fan so of course I'm happy with the year so far. But in the NFL, with a relatively small number of games played vs. the other major sports, it's really hard to know how good any team is until the season is nearly over. (Well, OK, I think we can safely say the Cardinals suck.)

I mean, look at this past weekend. San Fran not only beats the Bucs but beats them soundly? And if not for a bunch of missed FGs and dropped TD passes by "Mr. Sharpie," it would have been a regular woodshed whuppin'.

Don't forget Indy in the AFC and St. Louis in the NFC. Without Warner, it looks like the Rams are bringing back their powerhouse offense, and won't they be getting Faulk back soon? Yikes.

15. I could see it coming
They were kicking ass at the end of last year, Matt Hasslebeck was a decent pick up and Mike Holmgren or whatever his name is, is a good coach when he's not also a GM like he was the previous four years or something...

22. No kidding.
Here's to hoping that they don't put together a really good record and then completely blowing it the last several games (1999 anyone?). But being a Seattle sports fan, you've got to expect that kind of thing in your teams.

26. at least in the nfl the trading deadline is meaningless
unlike the mlb where seattle seems to miss that making big trades lead to winning championships (Yankees trading for Aaron Boone, Marlins trading for Ugueth Urbina, etc.)

25. How the hell did Parcells turn Quincy Carter around...?
...Carter was a decent college QB at UGA. I was never completely confident when he ran that offense.

And his first several years as a pro were blah.

But whazzup with him now? Does Parcells have that big of an impact?

24. I think.................
Donovan McNabb is overrated, but there's this need for the liberal media to see black quarterbacks and coaches do well so they artificially pump them up; most of the Eagles success in recent years has been due to their defence.

30. You forgot Denver.
Granted they've lost 2 games now, but the loss to Minnesota was thanks to 3 interceptions being thrown by a hence-departed backup quarterback.

Denver lost in KC by 1 point, but could have easily had that game wrapped up early on and lost it on a late 100 yard punt return. With Plummer back healthy, look for KC to fall when they visit in December.

Denver has to survive a few more weeks with Danny Kannell, but still has the talent to make the playoffs and do some damage.

Tampa, Denver, Oakland and Green Bay have all been exposed as the medicore teams they really are. Tampa is overhyped, with and average offense and a loud mouth but soft in the middle defense. Thier pride has gone to thier head. Denver has only one really good player (Portis) thier defense is soft and thier Quarterbacking is currently a joke, and itll get only slightly better when the interception prone Plummer returns. Oakland is just plain old, and Green Bays best days are way behind them.

KC has been my suprise so far, especially since thier percieved strenght, the offense, has been slightly above average so far. Just wait till the passing game gets in gear, and watch Holmes continue doing damage. Minnesota has been awesome as well, Culpepper, Moss and their running game are almost unstoppable.

MVPs so far would : NFC- Moss AFC- McNair/ Manning (toss up)
