Would it be wrong for me to take a job at Monsanto? |
|
So being the good environmentalist liberal that I am, and being without a job currently which I am, would it be hypocritical of me to take a job with Monsanto? I'm scared I know the answer to this.

I think it's okay to take their money and give it to Dems. You've got to survive.
What do others here think?

Yeah. But you gotta eat, too. And jobs are pretty hard to come by these days. It's a pretty tough question, I think.

Who knows what projects you'll be working on? You may actually be doing something with them that's environmentally sound.

5. I am whole heartedly in support of universal health care |
|
for all regardless of age and income and I work for an HMO. I work to support my non work life. I am not my job.
Given the system that we have, unless you have a trust fund and don't really HAVE to work, then you must earn a living and should not feel bad about working for a multinational like Monsanto. Who knows, maybe you can change some minds and bring some around to rethinking genetic engineering.

I also work for an unpopular company on DU but I am not involved in anyway with its major activity. I am low on the totem poll. Unless you are a bigwig making big decisions, I don't see why anyone would hold it against you.

9. Look. You gotta do what you gotta do. |

I am employed by two very crappy places. No real money and no benefits at all. If someone else offers me a job I would have to take it, whether I liked the company or not. You can make up for it in other ways.

Grow strong - both financially and emotionally!
Then you can built - until you can contribute on a major basis to progressive causes. You can influence minds the right way.
Besides, we all contribute in some way to Rethuglican coffers.
My secret shame is my annual purchase of my San Diego Charger tickets. I know the money is going to the Spanos coffers, but I comfort myself that the money goes to the City of San Diego too (a progressive city - went Kerry).
Nothing is perfect. The best thing we can do is network. Then, when the time comes, we can work together effectively on a particular goal.

It doesn't matter where your income comes from - it's all evil *somewhere* before it gets down to you. It matters where you spend it. I used to work for KeyBank (evil) but I avoided big-boxes and spent my earnings at Mom & Pop stores (progressive). Taking money out of the corporate economy and putting it into smaller, local establishments is GOOD. Buy organic produce with your monsanto earnings. That'd be a progressive act.

11. i wouldn't work for monsanto |
|
i wouldn't take a job with a company that is trying to control the world's food supply (read about terminator seeds) or that makes it's living by peddling chemicals that are harmful to the environment. also, read about the dirty dealings of monsanto regarding the percy shmeisser case...he's the canola farmer that tried to sue monsanto for having his organic canola polluted with GMO canola pollen from nearby monsanto farms only to be sued by monsanto instead because his crops were producing their lousy GMO crap canola (against his wishes).
monsanto is evil. i wouldn't work for monsanto just like i wouldn't work for the nazis.
why would i want my best work going to further a horrible cause.
i also wouldn't work for the defense industry or the tobacco industry.

12. I've thought about that sort of thing |
|
Since I have been trying to get a better job. Really, I'd prefer not to work for companies that I disagree with, but I don't know what I'd do if the right oppurtuntiy came along, especially if I didn't have a job. What sort of job would you be doing? For example, I might feel comfortable doing data entry for Monsanto but not being a research scientist. I am saying that if working to the best of my ability at the job gave the company a significant advantage compared if they hired joe schmoe, I would feel that taking the job would be unethical.

But my money and savings are quickly running out. I've already cashed out the 'ol 401k, so there goes retirement.
Wow, its going to be rough working for them with a clear conscience though! Especially after reading about some of the stuff you guys posted here.
This is a heck of a dilemma.

Monsanto believes in the soc-called "terminator gene" that would destroy much third-world agriculture, It is a deeply immoral company. You cannot work there in any capacity with a clear conscience.
