Oh, man...I'm sitting in my Assembler Language class right now |
|
waiting for my teacher to show up--plus, it's my last day of classes, and I have a $^&@*#(#@ing TEST!
If I do well, I don't have to take the final exam...please wish me luck!

9. Yes, they still teach assembler. |
|
It's what the CPU is actually executing (not exactly, but more or less a one to one representation) so the knowledge is still needed. When a new CPU is designed with a new instruction set, someone has to write the first compiler (probably a cross-compiler) for the thing. Also, I think assembler may still be used for some embedded applications (although they may be using C compilers for that now.)

but not when it's spring time on a Friday :-)
I only ever learned 68000 assembler, and promptly forgot it at the end of that electronics class, but it was still fun to learn.

although you will likely never use Assembler or possibly even JCL anywhere in the modern world. Chase the PC and client server world, not mainframe and you'll be able to re-use all that brain space for something else.

I had a programmer teacher who wanted me to sign up for his Assembler class, I'm sorry I didn't do it when I had the time. Now it's too much Java for me!
