I need Hi-speed internet advice |
|
I am trying to decide on hi-speed internet service and would like some feedback. We have 2 computers. They are not connected together. We are looking at Road Runner through Time Warner. We are trying to pay as little as possible for this service. I would like for both our computers to be online at once and maybe even have them networked together so we can share files. Of course Time Warner will do this for us at a price. How can we do it ourselves without having to pay extra and is Road Runner our best option for service? :freak:

1. buy a switch and two ethernet cables |
|
put the router between the two computer, connect one ethernet cable to each computer and then into the router. Connect the router to the roadrunner cable modem.
I think Roadrunner uses DHCP, so you don't need to really confugure anything once the service is running as your computers will draw their IP addresses from the DHCP server. Better still, with the router will be the only "visible" computer on the network, depending on how you set it up.

2. Go to Radio Shack and get a Linksys Ethernet Cable/DSL Router |
|
That's the ticket, it's a cinch to hook up.

4. Buy a DSL/Cable router |
|
Setup is easy. You will need network cards in both computers and to run some wires. You don't have to cable it, you can use off the shelf Cat 5 cables.
Just have them install the service on one computer and after they leave install your new router.

5. Either Way, You're Going To Pay... |

You need to either purchase home networking gear, or have RR do it.
The simplest thing would be to connect the computers with either a wireless or a hard-wired(with CAT 5 cable)router. That doesn't give you file sharing capability, but it does provide both computers with high speed internet at no extra cost. LinkSys is a good product, and easier to find in Office Max or Best Buy, than D-Link.
