Have you ever made a sudden, rash decision that changed your life? |
|
Edited on Wed May-04-05 07:18 PM by BlondieK143
What was your decision and what were the outcomes from it? Did it have a positive or negative effect on you? Would you take that decision back? And you really don't have to tell me if you don't want to. I'm getting ready to make a change in my life (no, not THAT kind of change) and I'm trying to see if I'm completely off my rocker. :)

Breaking up with my ex-girlfriend. My life would be far different if we were still together.
On that same note, going out with my ex-girlfriend. Life would be different if I'd said something else.
Getting angry at a co-working and grabbing his shoulder while yelling at him. I had to leave the job. I would still be working there if I hadn't done that. That's actually a good thing.

No regrets. Sometimes you just have to go for it.
This coming from a woman who can debate for months whether or not to have bangs.
I didn't say I was consistent.

16 years ago, I went to a Sufi camp. I had my first initiation into a Sufi order. I met a fellow there and within a week had quit my job, put my house up for sale, and moved from Illinois to Texas to be with him. We were married with the chanupe (sacred pipe) and then by the jp and finally in a Sufi ceremony.

4. I left the world of Rock an Roll after a bit more than 20 years. |

I made a great living, and did more drugs, saw more shows, climbed more rocks, and generally did the all the stuff most people dream about...and left it all to work in Internet communications. It was a great choice. I AM STILL ALIVE!!!!

5. I stopped eating red meat. |

It was the first step (for my diet) to where I am now. Positive? Oh, yes. For many reasons. Physically, I lost a bunch of weight. Mentally, I felt much clearer. Karmically, I felt much more in tune, positive and safe.

8. I jumped out of my girlfriend's moving car in Berkeley. |
|
It was one of the best damned sudden rash decisions I've ever made.
I took the bus home, and she sent my stuff back to me in a box without any note. I've only seen her once since then, after she was happily married to someone else. Of all the ways our horrible relationship could have ended, that was probably the best. It was very quick, no time to think.
Then I met my wife, and it was True Love. We have two wonderful kids who are teenagers now.
I've made a few rash decisions that haven't turned out well, but still, in general, I follow my heart.

on love, with a Canadian who lived 1600 miles away.
Best decision I ever made. Everyone told me I was crazy, but r and I just knew it was right. And once everyone else saw what we saw in each other, they agreed!

on impulse after seeing the notice on a bulletin board. I did not tell my parents, because I knew my mother would try to talk me out of it. ("But that's so far awaaaaay.")

19. Oh, some people may have thought so. |
|
Deciding four days after I met this guy that I wanted to marry him, getting engaged inside three weeks, and getting married three months after meeting him - well, some people might have thought that was rash. :D
We are still happily married nearly eight years later, and we have two children together.
Would I take back that decision? Not a chance.

I was in a dead end job, recovering from trying to drink myself to death, and in need of a sea change. I sold most of my belongings, including my classic rock LP album collection, and took the five hundred dollars cash and hopped on my vastly underpowered Kawasaki bike. I drove to Orlando Florida (I was in northern Ohio) and rented a sleeping room off an 80 year old woman while I looked for a job.
I found my job, and when I got my first paycheck I was down to forty two cents in my pocket. Literally.
My job was as a grass cutter and landscaper, and I went back to that type of work after yet another cross-state move, and stayed in the profession for over fifteen years.
I wish I still had the balls I had when I did that. It was in 1983.

25. Oh--you mean the day I quit the bookstore? |
|
I'd been there five years already. I'd had some good times but mostly a lot of bad ones.
I'd seen one boss fired for sexually harassing a male employee, I'd personally turned one store manager in for theft (then had to work for him for 6 weeks after he found out I'd done it!) and I had survived three department resets--involving moving a couple of million in stock from one place to another. I worked for a total of six store managers, three Regional managers ad two Zone managers in five and a half years...
I was at the point where I considered it a REALLY good day if nobody was chewing my ass by nine AM--and the store opened at 8:30!
One day I was standing there while a store manager was just nattering away about what a fuck up I was, and I just snapped. I looked over at him and said, "Yup, you are right--I AM a fuck up. I am such a fuck up that I am gonna give you THIRTY days to find my replacement."
It was simply AMAZING to just quit a job with no advance thought and no planning. It was also worth it to see my boss's face when i said that.
I was unemployed for a bit, and it took me a long time to earn as much as I was making there, but I completely changed my lifestyle and my career.

30. i have run off two times, almost a third and am contemplating a fourth |
|
the first time was in 1978. i was 24. my boyfriend and i had lived together for 5 years, and things were not going so well. i went to visit a friend in another state and never went home!
the second time was in 1987. i had lost a great job and found a crappy one, had built a house at the same time they changed the tax rate to reflect the housing boom, lost my crappy job and was miserable being single. a friend of a friend stayed at my house for a few days. when he left (i'd never seen this guy before!), he gave me $500 and told me to take a road trip. i left and only went back to sell the house a year later. i never saw that guy again, either.....
when the kids' dad left in 1998, i almost ran away again, 2000 miles far. i met a woman here who helped me with my kids and my crisis. that is the only reason i stayed put.
i'm ready to run again. life is boring, i'm ready to see other countries.
(this is part of a post i left the other night)

Both my marriages were "quick" descisions, And with the exception of my daughter (from the first) I regret BOTH of them.
I changed jobs and relocated after only about 4 month's consideration. That has worked out OK, even though I lost my house and had to file bankruptcy.
