One of my daughter's friends hung herself last night. |
|
She was in the 8th grade. What an awful thing. They had grief counselors at the school today. The scuttlebutt is that the girl did this because her boyfriend dumped her. I tried to explain to my daughter that these kinds of things are usually a lot more involved than that, but she's only 13 - this is hard for her to grasp.
Hug your kids tonight.

I dealt with a classmate's accidental death at that age, and that was hard enough. This has got to be traumatic for them.

5. Oh, Bunny, I am so sorry. |
|
Two years ago at my daughter's middle school, three children took their lives within a two month period. It was horrific.
There is a great suicide support group called the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention www.afsp.org, that will send all kinds of really informative materials to you that you can pass along to the school. They are a terrific resource and very kind and have great stuff about stopping 'contagious suicide'.
Best to you and your daughter.

One of my son's friends shot and killed himself last Thursday. They are also in 8th grade. This too seemed to be spurred by a breakup (I do believe there was more there than meets the eye - clinical depression is one risk factor for suicide).
My condolensces to your daughter and her friend's family.

11. It's the end of a whole world. |
|
It is always sad when someone so young and with so much to give and take and learn and screw-up decides to end her own life. If everyone would just grasp that the view they have of the world around them and that they experience in their life is a unique, unrepeatable world that will never, ever exist again - ending that life is ending a world that can never be again...too sad...

What a horrible tragedy for all involved. That just breaks my heart. That poor child, and all of the kids who knew her. :(
Judy Collins wrote a wonderful book about losing her only child to suicide. It's called "Sanity and Grace: A Journey of Suicide, Survival and Strength," and maybe it will be helpful to the girl's family, when they are ready. Also Survivors of Suicide may have a chapter in your area. I assume the grief counselors will make those recommendations to the kids who need it.
What a sad and horrible loss. My sympathies to all.

19. good lord -- same thing happened here a week or two ago |
|
in an affluent L.A. suburb. Co-worker knew the family. Girl had to fill in as "surrogate mom" for the younger kids, as the real mom was busy moving from one imploded affair/marriage with a man to the next...
Said co-worker went to the funeral, where several of the "mourners" walked up to the open casket talking on their cell phones...
Which tells you just about all you need to know about the kind of world that poor girl was growing up in.

Thank whomever that there are grief counselors there. I hope everyone involved gets counselling. The school I work at had two suicides last year (I started this year) and several staff members never got proper counselling. You can tell through conversations with them they've never been able to get over it, but they've never taken the time to have someone help them through.
I feel saddened when anyone feels the only escape is suicide, but I also feel anger at the person for it. I am lucky that I've never had to deal with it first hand, but I do know what it's like to feel there's no one you can turn to.
So, I ramble about me, but it's not about me. It's about you and your daughter, and my thoughts are with you and her and everyone this tragedy has touched.

34. The problem with a lot of 13yr olds is that they don't know that |
|
there is and end to pain. All they see is how sorry everyone is going to be when their gone. My son went to a shcool in the 90's that was being called Suicide High. Media parked out front, the whole shebang. He, and the other student's were lucky to be in a great school system that didn't back away from the problem.

35. I have several friends who have lost children and even a |

beautiful grandaughter to suicide. That family is going to need all the support in the world.
There are support groups for survivors....friends, relatives, spouses. Your local mental health association could possible set one up at the school, or perhaps a local church would sponsor one. Our church sponsors them and it is a wonderful thing.
My condolences to you and your daughter. Was she close to this young lady?
I lost my father to suicide, and I know the pain.

I almost had a similar fate at that age, over a girl.
It's not easy being that age; having to take in all of those new emotions --often alone-- with nowhere to go. Gah. Those are rough years.
I'm sorry
