14. Personally,
I don't like Phoenix at all. I think it's ugly. I love Arizona, but I don't see any reason to ever go back to Phoenix. But someone else might be able to think of something good about Phoenix who doesn't have my bias.

BTW, I was born there.

35. Yep, or 87 between Tucson and Mesa.
BTW, the area near Oracle (Biosphere location) is gorgeous--high Sonoran desert. And try to get to the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum.

3. phoenix?
you can drive to the top of south Mountain at sunset and watch the whole valley light up.

it's the mountain south of the airport with all of the red antennae on it.

Go check out the Arizona State University Campus, lots going on in that area.

my two thoughts.

22. Three of My Favorite Places
Sedona, Cottonwood, and Jerome. We've been there three times - December 1993, November 1994, and May 2000. The first trip there, I almost burned the brakes out on my wife's Sundance driving on 89A from Prescott to Jerome.......

I've been there at night, it is pretty scary at night. Superstition mountains is a nice place, also the ASU campus has lots to do there as well. This is directed to the original poster and to you by the way.

33. I went to Arizona State in the early 80's
Sedona was a mighty different place back then. Slide Rock was practically a secret and now it's a State Park!!! It's become very commercialized but I still love it there, I just try to avoid downtown on the weekends. A friend of mine got married at Cathedral Rock in April.

8. Lots to see, where are you at btw?
If you are in Flagstaff there is Walnut Canyon, Meteor crateor, you can take a drive down to Sedona or the Grand Canyon. There is also Sunset creater and the Snow Bowl but I believe there is no snow yet. If you are in my area you can go to Weaver's needle at Superstistion mountains and try to find the gold, but the Thunder God will likely not approve of it.

40. Me too, me too!
I'm at Power and Baseline. Isn't Mesa the armpit of AZ?

You might try driving north on Power Road a bit. You'll end up driving along the Salt River and see some trees and even a real lake -- not that fake lake in Tempe but a real one. I drive to work that way to avoid traffic and the aggravation. The time is the same, just a more pleasant experience.

39. I lived in Arizona
longer than rbnyc since we moved there three months before she was born, and visited once 11 years before. And I've never been to the Grand Canyon.

Daddy promised to take us one night in Yuma (not a fun place to visit!) and drove to Tucson the next morning, forgetting all about his daughter wanting to see the canyon and his son wanting to spit a mile.

When I lived in Phoenix, we had great plans for day trips, but I wasn't allowed out much during the day. I'm allergic to the sun and the doctor was afraid my reactions might hurt the baby. Rbnyc's father promised to take me to the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas. So far, I haven't been to either.

My larger half now keeps saying we'll go to the Grand Canyon. I keep telling him to stop saying that. I want him to surprise me, but that will be impossible since I'll have to navigate. ;-) BTW, his daughter gave me a video of the canyon one Christmas. Now I can see it inside and not be afraid of the sun. Can't spit a mile, though.

24. I love the Desert Botanical Garden.
It's still a bit hot here, but it is a beautiful, peaceful place. If you decide to visit, I suggest going early in the morning before it gets too hot.

The drive north on the Beeline between the Valley and Payson is beautiful.

If you head up to Payson, be sure to see Tonto Natural Bridge and the Mogollon Rim.

I agree with the other posters who suggested Sedona and Taliesin West. We visited Taliesin last week. My daughter played FLW's favorite piano for our tour group to show off the acoustics in the Cabaret Room.

27. The wackiest hotels/resorts I've ever
seen are just outside of Phoenix. I forget the names, but there are all these resorts, in the desert!, with golf courses, water fountains, and many pools. I kept wandering around and thinking of my environmental roots and conspicuous consumption.

On the other hand, there are spots in the desert with 'magnetic pull' or something like that. You can get maps at tourist sites. I had fun looking for them and the scenery is spectacular.
