My sister's kid's combined tuition bill for next year is $80,000 |
|
both boys are attending Carnegie Mellon University, the youngest just got accepted and starts in the Fall.
Luckily they both have some scholarships...but that tuition bill just about killed me.
My combined college bill for 4 years was $40,000...

4. My philosophy - Ivy or Public |
|
IMHO, the only schools that are worth that kind of cash you are sweating are the Ivies. If not, then you might as well save your money and go to a good public university. The private non-ivies have some nerve charging $25,000+++ per year - they are not worth it.

7. Actually CMU is quite a prestigious place for what the boys are taking |
|
the eldest is in Computer Science and holding down well over a 3.5 GPA.
The youngest is thinking about Mechanical or Civil Engineering.

3. Ah, the exclusive CMU! |
|
I'm a Pitt person myself. Don't let them become snobs; I know some extremely arrogant people from CMU.

5. I too am a Pitt grad and nope...I won't let them become snobs |
|
I changed their diapers when they were babes...I know all their little secrets....bwahahahahahaha
Sadly the people I have met professionally that attended CMU were perhaps bright, but always arrogant and in many ways lacking in common sense....

15. I knew a lot of folks from CMU |
|
who were not arrogant... but that was a long time ago. Apparently that is not the case anymore... per some other Pitt people that work with them. ;) ( disclaimer: another Pitt person here)
And I used to pay $500 bucks per term for undergrad - even grad school was cheap ( gasp) 20 years ago. :)
I have a friend sending her kid to Cornell... $40,000 per year. Astounding.

6. my tuition bill for 10 years of college and grad school... |
|
Edited on Wed May-11-05 10:29 PM by mike_c
...was about $10,000-- $2,500 per year as an undergrad and tuition waived in grad school. That would probably be about doubled today, but there are lots of damned good state schools with very reasonable tuition.
on edit-- that was 20 years ago, but is still comparable to the Cal State University where I teach today.

9. yeah, I'm STILL in debt for my living costs for 10 years.... |
|
That was just tuition. The vast majority of my student loans was for paying rent, eating, and so on while I was in school.

Kinda tells you something about American school costs when the most widely known and respected university on the planet is far cheaper than an American school.

11. It does get expensive |
|
Edited on Wed May-11-05 10:46 PM by Scooter24
By the time I finish law school, my combined tuition should come to around $390,000.
$100,000 High School Tuition ($25,000/yr) $140,000 Undergrad Tuition ($35,000/yr) $150,000 Law School Tuition ($50,000/yr estimated)
My younger brother's tuition total should come close to that as well, but he is planning on getting his MBA instead of law school.
Plus my parents have a 4 year-old and 2 year-old triplets to put through school as well. My father isn't looking forward to that bill. :D

13. Got my degree in 1976 from an excellent small, private college... |
|
Total cost-around $20,000. Total debt...$5,000. I have no idea how kids today will make it. Its an entirely different world.

16. In much of Europe a college education is free. |

We should demand the same, but Democrats only talk about social security and prescription drugs for seniors because that is where the votes are.
