for me it was cream and frank zappa. oh lord how my parents hated all that. and one poster i had on my wall of zappa and the mothers dressed in women's clothing drove him to rip it down and burn it when i was at work.

6. Pretty much the entire concept of me listening to punk rock...
From age 12 until about 15 I was into Metal and strangely enough my parents had no problem with that. My dad took me to Iron Maiden and Dio concerts and actually enjoyed them quite a bit. But when I started drifting to punk my mom in particular had issues with that. She said it was "too negative" and cynical. Duh.

For like a decade after I started listening to punk (which I still do) she would still tell people and refer to my music as heavy metal.

And my dad taking me to see the Ramones was the final nail in the coffin of him taking me to see shows. He couldn't fathom how I could go from liking the music I did which had spectacle, showmanship, and musicianship, to liking 4 guys standing on stage and playing 3 chords and standing perfectly still for 25 minutes.

8. One song "I wear my sun glasses at night"
My mom absolutely hated that song. She said it was the same words over and over. I think we played it so often just to make her more pissed off. Shameful youth ;)

15. Dylan.
"Who's killing the cat?" my dad would yell up the stairs. He also hated Zappa & Led Zepplin. But Dylan was the most agonizing for my dad.

20. Mostly art rock (Yes, Supertramp, Genesis) and post-Romantic era classical
There were some bands/composers from both genres they grew to like but mostly is was "turn that off" or "what the hell is this?"

I went through a phase of obsession with musicals. One day Dad burst into my room screaming, "Make it stop! Will you please play some g*d d*mned rock and roll!"

23. Foghat and Van Halen (the Diamond Dave version)
My brother had the Foghat album and she despised it. He also shook the house once with Van Halen 2 on his new stereo.

Mom also hates all heavy metal, and has a particular disliking to GNR. Ironically, my 89 year old grandmother likes "November Rain", even if she thinks the band that sings it is "tattoed and scary-looking".

My mom took us to see the Cars in concert at Pine Knob circa 1980. She spent the whole time covering her ears with her hands.

24. Philip Glass! How my mother hated it!
She hated most everything I listened to, but she had a true visceral reaction of hate to Philip Glass.

My dad didn't like my music either, but one day I was listening to Billy the Mountain and he thought it was pretty funny. He really laughed at the "you better get down there for your fucking physical" part.

26. Jimmy Buffett of all people
I played "Coconut Telegraph" constantly when it first came out, and they objected to the lyrics from "The Weather is Here, I Wish you Were Beautiful"

Besides she bitches about the mosquitoes
She says "Down there there is nothing to do"
Her goddamn phone never stops ringing
He'll try the service in a day maybe two

They were furious to hear both "goddamn" and "bitches" in their house -- thank God I didn't grow up in the era of Gangsta Rap! They're still appalled at the use of any "curse word"; my SO's most cherished fantasy is to tie them up and make them watch "Deadwood" for 3 hours
