Scenario: the cab ride is $10. You want to give $2 tip. You have only a 20 |
|
How do you tell the can driver you want to give him $2 tip?
I usually say "Can I have a receipt for $12?"

Dude, have you been in the city for less than 2 hours? You sound like the tourists in NYC and Boston I encounter.

...speaking of that, I have a great tourist story. My friend visiting from Oregon got on the T and handed the guy a 20 bill  He just sighed and waved him on.

5. Yes, like waitresses, they're used to the ambiguous situation |
|
of not knowing what they are being tipped- and not wanting to be presumptuous. Often they'll even ask if you need change.

10. Asking if a customer wants change is REALLY bad form in a server. |
|
I'm always polite about it, because a lot of people aren't and being a server is a hard, often crappy job. But a waiter or waitress should always bring back the full count of change when presented with cash. Then if the customer leaves a cash tip, the server will know then, and only then. If it's a great tip, I'm happy for you; if it's a lousy tip, come serve me and you'll get a good one. (unless you're simply AWFUL).
But never, EVER, ask if the customer wants change from his or her cash. Just bring it.

9. Yup. That's the way. I've done it for years. |
|
"Just let me have eight back, please."
They figure out the rest. :)

13. As a former cab driver |
|
If you give thema 20 and don't ask for all ten back they'd be pretty happy, a two dollar tip isn't bad.
I had this one lady thogh, (well all of the drivers did) who took cabs almost every day and would pay $2.25 on a $2.20 fare and constantly remind us it was more than she had to pay.
Any line repeated again and again gets tiresome, and when you start out with one that weak it is a real drag. We all hated her.
All in all though, that was a pretty fun job!

15. The shortest answer is "12" |
|
It reminds me of a taxi in Montréal once. For one weird reason he couldn't speak English and I was the only one who talk a bit French. At least I could say the name of the restaurant in more or less intelligable French, but when we arrived I had the same problem and I just said Huit (and in my prenounciation it must have sounded like "Weed") and he understand the message and gave my $2 in change.
