The sound a body makes when hit by a golf club.
Never thought I would hear that sound in real life. :scared:

My friend Emily and I were downtown this evening - heading to a coffee shop. We actually found street parking and were in the process of straightening the car out when Emily looked over and noticed a scuffle on the other side of the street. A drunk guy was harassing a well-dressed couple on their way into their SUV. I saw the drunk guy shove the other guy, then stumble across the street toward our car. We hurriedly locked the doors...then looked up in time to see the SUV guy grab a golf club from the back of his car and chase after the drunk.

They ended up on the sidewalk, about 3 feet from Emily's car, with the SUV driver wailing on the drunk with his Big Bertha. Bizarre. Thwack...thwack...thwack. WTF would possess a person to do something like that?? It wasn't self defense - the drunk had already stumbled away.

We called 911 and drove away, just as the drunk ripped a tree branch down and started beating on the SUV with it.

We skipped the coffee and went for the mixed drinks.

:scared: :scared: :scared:

5. Granted, I didn't see all of what led up to it...
But at worst, he shoved the SUV guy and drove away.
Did he deserve to be chased down and beaten by a golf club?

9. when I was about 8 years old...
Edited on Sun May-15-05 12:02 AM by _testify_
I was living in NYC, in a diverse area, with a lot of folks from Bangladesh. What many ppl from the sub-continent do is come over with a large family, all of whom have contributed to opening a business of some sort, usually convenience stores (we called em 'bodegas'). Anyhow,
two rival families ended up opening stores across the street from each other. I'm fairly sure, however, there were other factors that led to shopkeeper A stabbing shopkeeper B to death with a crowbar in his chest about a half dozen times in the middle of the street.

My friends and I were only about twenty feet away.

29. Not to one up anybody, but
I heard a man stabbed to death outside my hotel room window one night when I was ten. It was in Carlsbad (New Mexico? I forget, but we were there for the cave) at about 2 AM, and it took at least forty-five minutes for this man to die. I had no idea what I was hearing, but it unhinged my brain: long ascending wails that lasted almost a minute and then trailed off to a quaver.

I woke my sister and she freaked out, too. I was so unnerved by the sound that I was about to join in with a scream of my own when at last it stopped. Dad found out the next morning what had happened and moved us to a different hotel about 30 miles down the road.

It was the most ungodly thing I ever heard, and I've never quite shaken that sound from my memory. I've never heard anything else even remotely like it.

39. Woah.... that is awful....
When I was in 8th grade, my family took a vacation to Florida. My father would never pay for airfare, so we drove from Illinois to Florida. En route, we made the decision to stay in a hotel in Atlanta. We all went in to check in and open up the room and then my father asked me to go get some bags from the car. As I walked out, I noticed a man laying against the hotel with a stream of blood trickling down the sidewalk. I grabbed some bags and went back into the hotel. I think I remember telling my parents and them not believing me, or saying something to the effects of "oh yeah?" They are not easily shaken, to say the least. A few minutes later we saw police lights and heard sirens, so someone clearly called the police, but man... when I first saw that guy, I didn't even really believe that I was seeing what I was seeing. I had to think about it, and really, it was only later, when I was a bit older, that I was able to grasp the gravity of what I had seen.

how hurt could the drunk have been if tore down a tree branch and wailed on the SUV after this "vicious beating"? And what was the Golf Club guy doing while this was happening?

37. good question
i honestly don't know - i assumed it was because he was so incredibly drunk, he wasn't feeling it as much as a more sober person would.

suv guy had already gotten in his car and was trying to pull out of his parking spot when drunk guy was wailing on his car.

33. Too much club
The best golf club to deliver a beating with is the eight iron. Heavier head and fairly long shaft. The problem witrh woods, especially the new metal woods, is they have a lot of surface area and not enough weight. Plus graphite shafts are too flexible. Finally, they are really expensive and somewhat fragile.

However, experience has proven that the sand wedge does not have enough length and the weight prevents the rapid beating necessary.

36. I have to wonder
if SUV guy - once drunk guy stumbled off... would have had the same reaction if there was no female with him? Would he have just given chase to shove back? Would he have just gotten in the car - maybe called the police to get drunk guy picked up? Or would he have still gone to the car to get the golfclubs.

Any mention of it in the A2News this morning (can't remember if they do a police beat - but in hoosierland counterpart there is a daily police beat/pickup (usually drunk college students) item in the paper.

What an icky thing to witness - that would shake me up.

Edited on Sun May-15-05 10:06 AM by CornField
I'm glad one kid didn't whack the other with a golf club... but I'm also sorry the actual whacking that took place was not accidental.

Edited to add: A young nephew once tried to sneak up on his older brother as the older boy swung a baseball bat. It layed him out cold and we all spent 2-3 hours at the emergency room as we were grilled on whether it was a case of child abuse. I could hear my young nephew screaming, "I told you how it happened! I was going to give him a wedgie..."

That was almost as good as the time when one was playing with a new fishing pole and hooked a niece... or when the swingset came loose from the concrete and fell over on a brother-in-law... or when the brother came down on the bar of the trampoline... or...

Maybe my family is just accident prone? LOL!!!

44. The only sound worse than a golf club hitting a body,
Edited on Sun May-15-05 01:58 PM by jaredh
is the sound of a baseball bat hitting a head. :scared:

At baseball practice in 7th grade, a kid got mad at another kid and swung the bat full speed at the his head. Luckily, the kid came away from it with just a bump, thank God.
