I've never seen any of the movies. Even the 1977 version, but I have a friend who wants to have a movie party and show the first three and I may go and see what all the fuss is about.

The original series was half-assed I thought. The new series is horrible.
So what I'm saying is that I don't get it either.

fans go nuts over things like this. Although somehow the 3 first ones were much better than 4 & 5. Haven't seen 6 yet.

10. It is great mythology |
|
Timeless themes of good versus evil, redemption, a quest for something that transcends ourselves, destiny, and not a small bit of 40's/50's B-movie fun nostalgia.
Lucas made the original Star Wars in 1977 to "make movies fun again".
He is also a disciple of the late mythologist Joseph Campbell, and the more you read of classical myth, the more Star Wars resonates.
And yes, it's just plain fun too. :-)

11. So, what you are saying is --- |
|
You don't get a series of movies, because you have never seen any of them?
Well, that's not exactly a suprise is it?
Anyway, on to the question: Star Wars is so freakin' popular because it blurs the line between Sci-Fi and Fantasy; it has characters that are believable (I mean motivation-wise); it has excitement, plot twists and some pretty awesome dialogue; it has lightsabres.
You should see the films. If you see the originals, try to find VHS copies of the unaltered originals. THe DVD versions are OK and I imagine less disappointing than seeing them for someone who never saw the original.

15. just because I haven't seen them |
|
doesn't mean I don't know about them.
You can barely watch a tv show, or listen to a radio show, without someone going on about Star Wars.
Watching Adult Swim last night, for example.

12. Cause some liberal named George Lucas makes some damn good movies. |
|
The movies that launched careers and industries. The stories are great, the characters are great, and it is the top sci-fi series. The music is the best too. Oh man, what is not to like about these movies.
Maybe you should watch at least one to find out.

16. I think the first movie was popular due in part to the special effects |
|
Edited on Mon May-16-05 02:56 PM by Mike Daniels
which for 1977 probably were unlike anything most people had seen in the movies up to that time.
The story (based in part in Ep. 4 on the samurai film "The Hidden Fortress") obviously played some part in its success as well otherwise no-one would have cared enough to go to the first two sequels. Of couse, Lucas expertly set up the plot so that the movies played as serial installments where you had to go to the next installment to see what happened next.

I've seen the original three movies and they were fine... no big deal, but they weren't terrible. I haven't seen any of the prequels and have no intention to... ugh!
