It's something I have been thinking about A LOT lately, especially as I get older and start to feel the physical effects.

I should definitely be looking into it more seriously soon.

36. I'm really glad to hear you say that, my dear Longgrain...
BTW, I took your painting to the framer's today, and he'll have it done at least by 2 weeks from now...I asked him to leave the back open so I can see your signature! We picked out a nice frame, and he charged me less since I'm a Democrat! Then there will be the final photo of that lovely work, in it's final spot! I can't wait...

17. Oh, they're nice for a distracting read.
But only the UK and A&A refresh fast enough for sustained interest. R&T is just a poisoned chalice to post in, but occasionally interesting. "Classic Films" is sadly colonised by American TV listings, but that's par for the course for an American site.

28. Well the photo group came along at the right time
We were all depressed about the election and we needed something non-political to focus on. And photography is one of those hobbies -- unlike art -- where almost anyone can participate in.

And the photo contests just got more people aware of the group. Remember what I told you about marketing? The contests became a perfect example of marketing the photo group. It just took off. We started with ten entries and now we got more than 20 entries in the last two days for the next contest.

And everybody in the group -- and I really do mean everybody -- adds something different to the group. Everybody has their own photo style and ideas to improve the group.

And you know what? We're just getting started down there.

29. What do mean--unlike art?
Edited on Tue May-17-05 09:37 PM by Longgrain
I understand, not everyone can draw or paint, but everyone can still look at it, and participate somehow.

Besides, I know I've said this before, but, photography is an art.

33. I knew you were going to ask that
So here it goes. First of all, I meant it as a compliment.

Art intimidates a lot of people because many times, they just don't get it. But they hear all these art lovers raving about a Picasso or a Rembrandt and they simply can not see the beauty in it.

I'm particular to Salvador Dali myself and I've noticed in a couple of your paintings, you may have been inspired by Dali, but of course, I could be wrong.

And most of the people who do get art are incapable of producing art. They wouldn't even know where to begin. And even if they had a vision, they wouldn't be able to put it on the canvas. (I'm mainly speaking for myself here, but I don't think I'm different than most people).

But in photography, all you have to do is pick up a camera. And almost everybody has a camera. We become familiar with cameras before we can even walk. By the time we can walk and talk, we know exactly what our parents are doing when they are snapping photos of us.

Of course, good photographers don't rely just on family snapshots, but it usually starts from there. Almost every kid who has posed for their parents has asked their parents if they could take a picture.

But art is different. You truly have to be inspired to become an artist because for the most part, your parents don't have paints and brushes and canvases laying around.

And for the most part, we get punished for scribbling on the wall with our crayons.

I can go on and on, but do you get what I'm saying?

35. Okay, I don't mean to divide the lines between art and photography, but
Edited on Tue May-17-05 10:44 PM by Longgrain
But, Photography requires an understanding of technology, and a patiences to learn that technology, that many of us artists (and I don't speak for us all) understand, but just don't get (and many of us can not afford).

I don't know what I'm saying either. I seem to have better luck with the camera than most people, and I don't know what the hell I'm doing.

I'm just composing.

I'm doing the same thing with a brush and paint, or and ink and pen, or my finger tip, on my car windshield. It's all the same too me.

I'm composing.

I get what your saying.

Most people don't see the world the way we do...

It was the technical part that I had to learn, and I'm still learning.

But I've met photographers who have been the complete opposite.
