About a month ago I had a job interview for a dream job (for me it is--doing clean up of sites that have environmental damages). At the interview, the hiring manager said that he had already decided he wanted to hire me--that all he had to do was check my references and get the paperwork through the corporate offices. He said this should be done in a few days and that he was hoping for me to start working on May 9th.
Well--it turned out that he didn't even call my references until May 10th--and I haven't heard from him yet as far as a "start date".
Do you think they have decided they don't want me? Or do these things sometimes take a lot longer than expected?
This is a position with an environmental engineering consulting firm. (Kleinfelder). If anyone knows anything about this kind of thing--or even if you don't--please give me some reassurances!
(I have not been posting lately--I am ashamed to be starless--but can't spend on anything extra until I land the job--actually until I have worked there for a month or so--cause then I will have a paycheck hopefully!!) Please don't ostracize me just because I am struggling financially--in a few months I think I will be on my feet if I just have some luck.

1. call and ask about this |
|
tell them you wanted to follow up--you really want this job--blablabla.
a friend of mine (a long time ago) was interviewing for office manager. he hired the woman who called him back and followed through--he said it proved to him that she really wanted the job and would be dependable and reliable. he was right. (of course, she was also qualified for the job)
be persistent
good luck!

3. I have already contacted them three |
|
times since the interview wo check on their progress--April 28, May 9 and May 12th. (that is how I know they did finally check my references etc). I have been debating contacting them again Thurs or Fri--but I have not decided if I should do this for certain--contacting them too many times may make me seem desperate? They definitely know how interested I am in the position.
When I talk to them, they seem very nice--but they definitely not in a hurry. I don't know if this is a brush off, disorganization, or just that things take a while in the process.

some kind person donated a star for me!!!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
I have been hoping to get the good job--then I can afford to contribute.
This means a lot to me--now I don't have to wait until I have money to enjoy all the features of DU--and when I do get $$$ I will still donate it to DU--but I will also make a point to help someone else who may be down on their luck.
Thank you so, so much!!!

I remember talking to you a month ago; recently I was wondering how you are doing, and how all that interviewing and stuff was going for your dream job. And, lo and behold, here you are!
I'm so glad someone gave you a star...no, it wasn't me...But don't ever worry about your financial status here on DU. No-one will hold it against you at all. Everyone here knows how it is to not have much money. I've seen people posting here who have been out of work for months and months. They get a lot of sympathy and sometimes good suggestions too....
My "take" on your situation, for what it's worth, is that they do want you, but that these things take more time than they realized. I think that time is a rather fluid concept for those making the decisions...They don't think about the person who's waiting!
I'd go easy on contacting them. I suspect they know you're interested, and are waiting. Beyond that, I cannot really advise you...GOOD LUCK! not that you really need it, IMHO!

I think you may be dead on--I have a friend who works there so I knew the job was coming available even before it was officially posted. When he told me about the opening coming up--he thought it would be posted in about a week--but it took nearly a month (!!!).
So--I guess things do often take longer than expected--especially when they have to go through corporate offices etc. I probably need to just restrain myself. The hiring managers estimated start date for me was obviously optimistic.
Good things--I know they have checked my references and turned the paperwork in. Barring some weird things that causes them to completely change their mind (this is my fear in weak moments) it is probably just a question of time.
Bad things--time moves really slowly for me--waiting on this job. For the people on that end--they have lots of other things to do (all more important than this to them). I have to deal with that!
Thank you for the kind words--I really need this so badly!
