I was involved in a youth sail program on the Chesapeake Bay, we had this Skipjack that was built in 1900, vintage. I also used to sail catamarans and windsurf.

It's off of the Raritan Bay across from N.J ... Key Port, Red Bank, the Atlantic Highlands. Sailing east - the currents of the Verrizano Narrows can be tricky for a small sailboat.

I was sailing on San Fransisco Bay a few years ago, first time and we headed out towards the Gate. The currents got noticeably worse right where we had poked our nose out from underneath the bridge, huge swells too. Little water meets big water = Bad juju. That was a great time, I went out on the Bay twice in as many days. Once on the scow schooner Alma http://www.nps.gov/safr/local/alma.html and again with my good friends buddy who had a membership at the Suasalito Yacht Club.

I was a novice to sailing when I ventured between two little islands just south of the bridge. Everything seemed OK as I turned north. The late afternoon winds were freshening and then I found myself in the lee of the land with the current heading in the opposite direction from home. That was a workout sculling with the rudder away from shore to catch a breeze again.

Pretty wild boat, used to haul cargo, built around 1898. The hull was rectangular with a flat bottom so it could cruise in and around the shoals in the Bay, kind of like a barge with sails. Fore and main masts, schooner rigged. I just went down to the pier and asked the captain if there was anyway I could go out with him some time. I did a little work for him and the next day he took me out. The crew was volunteer, I think about five or six.
