The astonishing secret life of a Mafia gangster who spent years on the run in London is revealed today.

Francesco Tonicello was one of Italy's most wanted men. A master forger, he worked under 11 aliases and fenced priceless artworks, antiques and gold for Venetian godfather Felice "Angelface" Maniero.

When Maniero was jailed, Tonicello fled to London - and spent five years in a run-down flat in Vauxhall.

Italian authorities finally caught up with him when they intercepted a Christmas cake sent by his mother. He was arrested and is now on remand at Brixton prison and due before magistrates next month. It was a bizarre end to an extraordinary tale.
