In order to truly appreciate Peter Gabriel's Genesis, you have to... |
|

...be a little bit, erm, let's say, unbalanced. I mean that as a GOOD thing obviously. :headbang:  :headbang:  :headbang:  :headbang:

evoke apocalypse, even while dressed up as a giant flower :P
The songs and stories kicked ass. IMHO, Genesis was no more after Peter Gabriel left.

Gabriel-era Genesis was all about the myths and archetypes that the human race (or at least those that populate England) really live by. They may have been pretentious, but at least they were grappling with The Big Issues. (They were kinda like DU in that way.)
In contrast, Phil Collins-era Genesis ultimately seemed to think that the greatest problem facing mankind was what brand of beer to drink tonight.
If you wanted to be nasty, Genesis on the whole could be described the way-- uh, was it DeToqueville?-- described the USA: passed from adolescence directly to decadence without ever achieving maturity.

3. If all you want is a 3 chord, 3 minute pop song, then look elsewhere |
|
If you like songwriters who can step outside 4/4 time, put a story into their lyrics, and give you decent instumental playing, then Genesis with Gabriel is an excellent place to go. Who wants to get dealt the same hand as you get with all the identikit pop groups?

6. Everytime Genesis lost a member |

They got more popular and less interesting until they became the boring pop Phil Collins Experience.

I still have a bit of a soft spot for Trick of the Tale and Wind and Wuthering even with Collins on vocals. Hackett was a pretty amazing guitar player. However, after that...ugh.
Philly is still a great drummer, however. Just wish he would have stayed there.

11. I even like Collins first solo album |
|
It was interesting and moody but then he became a pop star.
Oh well, at least Gabriel is still interesting.

13. I actually haven't listened to Face Value in a loooong time |
|
But I remember liking it quite a bit.
I also liked a handful of songs on his second and third solos.
Gabriel's solo career has been far more interesting and of a much higher caliber, however. (Although, I wasn't that taken with his last album. Probably because I had to wait for it for close to half of my entire life, but still...)

18. They were incredible. |

I liked them high, I liked them sober, I LOVED them tripping, I dug them drunk. It's all good, my friend.
But on psychedelics....it's like a whole new musical language.
