I'm discouraged-I can't find homes for my foster kittens!
Here in Florida, we've had a kitten and puppy population explostion because of the hurricanes last year. I'm caring for three lttle ones right now, and expect to have more in the house soon-but I've had no luck at all placing any of these three! They are very well socialized, love to cuddle and play, are very well behaved, and are cute as can be...but still, I can't find them homes. I've had them at my local holistic pet shop, I have them listed on Petfinder.com, I've put up some flyers...what else can I do?

Khephra, the tenderhearted loverboy:

Isis, the adorable, impish lapkitten:

Osiris, the playful extrovert with the Oriental personality:

3. They are so beautiful and cute
if I could, I'd honestly take them all, but it would be cruel in my small home to take in any more than the two I have.

4. Wish I had room, Lorien!
But I already adopted Sterling from your rescue. He's doing fine, by the way! He was all snuggled up with me while I took a nap in the bedroom I have him in while he gets adjusted to the other animals. I brought him out once so far. He and Smoke hissed at each other, Sterling hissed at Magic (the dog), and Magic just looked on, oblivious. I'm sure he will be fine after getting to know them better. He is the most beautiful, sweet cat I've ever seen! Thank you so much for posting his photos here so I knew about him!

Peace,
Bella

8. Thank you so very much for taking on an older kitty!
Sterling is such a sweet, adorable boy-and his story was so heartbreaking. The owners of the holistic pet food store asked about him today (he was there last week) and they were just THRILLED that he had found a good home-and with a Dem, no less! I expect that he'll hiss for a couple of weeks-every new cat I had took at least that long. My mom adopted an older cat four years ago, and it took over a month for him to stop fighting with her younger cat and hissing at her roommate's dog-but after that the three were the very best of friends! I've found that a product called Feliway helps shorten the adjustment period, too. Just take it slow, and I'm sure they'll learn to love each other in time. :-)

Sterling sure is a looker! Here's a photo for those who missed him last week:

11. Yes he is gorgeous!
I brushed him today and he LOVED it, couldn't get enough of it. I'm sure he will calm down in a few weeks. What is this Feliway stuff?

13. It's a behavioral modification spray
(also sold as a plug in diffuser). It's made of synthetic cheek pheromones (what kitties leave behind when they rub on something). I use it when I go away for a few days, have fosters in the house, or take the kitties to the vet. it doesn't smell like much to us, but it's very calming and reassuring to them. You can get it at most pet supply stores (also effective for curbing bad behavior like spraying, clawing, etc-not that Sterling would ever do such things)!

BTW-check out the DU pet's group! ;-)

5. I would adopt one
in a heartbeat as well, but I've currently got six: I took one from my best friend about a month ago--one of her mom's, Oliver. Her mom died last week at 85, and had already begun to forget all her kits. I've been trying to hide Ollie from my landlord friend, Steve, because he thinks I only have 5.

If I had my own place, I might consider it, but not until I'm out of here.

I wish you good luck in finding them homes--they're all beautiful! My favorite is Osiris, because I lost my little black girl, Kira, in October, 2003, and I miss her terribly.

I suggest we keep this kicked so that more DUers can see the thread and might have a way to adopt one or more of them.

10. I'm in love with all three, but...
1. We live in Texas, and
2. We already have two very sweet kitties, both of them rescues.

Otherwise, ginbarn and I would so be there. Good luck!

14. lorien, i'd adopt
isis in a heart beat -- but my work schedule just doesn't allow for me to drive that far... ((and i'd like to test nikko out on her beforehand, and the distance doesn't really allow it)) she's just ADORABLE though and would make such a great sister to nikko! i can't BELIEVE no one's adopted her! here in atlanta, kittens and cats don't stay at shelters or as fosters for very long, and certainly not ones that beautiful!

15. Well, if I travel through Atlanta anytime soon
(usually a stopover when I travel via Delta) I could bring her-then pick her up if she didn't work out (if that would work). Atlanta didn't have three hurricanes pass through it last year-that's our problem. Too many young ones this year-and I'm afraid that many won't find homes. :-(

21. At this point I'll place them any way I can!
They would all do better in a multi-cat household, and two are often easier than one...but since theirs such a glut of kittens and puppies out there, any loving home will have to do!

We're in Tampa, but we can put your locale and contact info. I can also pepper the e-lists and whatnot in the Tampa Bay area.

They're terribly cute. I think that we can help if you want.

I've got them on our local site, but there were already loads of black and gray/blue kittens listed already. These little ones have had a lot of handling, so they've developed exceptional personalities.

25. Damn...maybe a DUer in another state can help you.
I can't take on cats because 1) I have a bird, and 2) this apartment complex has way too many cats. :(

Lots of folk on DU love cats, so maybe someone in a different area could help you.

And yes, the kittens are too cute for words. :D

27. gah, I would take them
Illinois is too far away and I have an intense travel schedule this summer, so I have to wait til the fall. But I would love to have those kids. I want two or three siblings. My Maine Coon, who I love to pieces, is dying of cancer. He's not in pain, but it is inevitable. I was hoping to get kittens about now, but I have six business trips this summer and my ex can look after ONE cat, but not three.

Those would have been perfect for me.

29. Go to YahooGroups.com
Edited on Sun May-22-05 05:18 AM by RebelOne
Register with them and then put in a search for animal rescue groups in your area. You can post on the message boards there. I found homes for three kittens that were dumped at my front door through a local rescue group on YahooGroups. In fact, you can post with a lot of other groups even if they are not in your state. Very often, if someone wants to adopt, transports can be set up for them.

I've done it twice without problems. Are you in the LA area? I have various friends in the film industry who travel out there (mostly to Glendale/Burbank) on a semi-regular basis-I don't know if they would be willing to shuttle a kitty, but I can always ask!
