Ok, I just watched Episode 6, why the hell did Vader die?
One minute, he is standing next to the Emperor while he is zapping Luke. The next, he picks him up and throws him over the rail. Then he is dying. He only got zapped by some incidental lightning, then he was breathing hard. Did he die from having the helmet removed??

Why the hell did this not strike me before?

1. Maybe
I'm not a Star Wars geek. And I haven't seen Episode 6 in a long time.

But maybe when Vader threw the Emperor over, it was actually Anakin doing it. And Vader had already died with the dark side left his body. What was left was Anakin and what remained of him was not strong enought to exist without the dark side of the force.

4. I wondered that from the moment I saw it the first time.
There was absolutely no reason for him to be dying, especially that quickly.

Just saw Ep III tonight, and one thing was curious to me

NO SPOILERS _ _ PROMISE!

In Ep III, Obi Wan is around R2 quite a bit.

Yet in Ep IV he claims to not know the droids.

Was he just BS'ing Luke, or did he really forget? Doesn't seem possible to me.

6. Yeah, I thought about that one too (tiny spoiler)
I know Bail Organa had the droids memory erased, but not Obi Wan's!!

Also, there is a scene in Empire Strikes Back where Obi Wan says that Luke is "our only hope", and Yoda said "no, there is another", when in 3 he was present for the birth.

14. the reference to "there is another" .. is Leia...
Somewhere, don't ask me where, there is speculation in official Jedi circles that if Luke is killed or fails, or goes over, his sister might be trained as a Jedi.

24. I was getting at the fact that Obi Wan was present at their birth
In 3, but in 5 he said that Luke was the "only hope".

Small inconsistency, but entertaining to find!!

25. I have the same problem with Owen Lars
not remembering C3PO when, in epIV he *buys* the same droid that had been his stepmother's, and had been on his farm for five years as of epII. True, he'd been gold-plated since, and there are lots of protocol droids, but C3PO's mincing English butler manner and *name* slipped past the guy?

18. He was BSing Luke.
Technically, he said "I don't seem to remember ever owning a droid." While not necessarily true, he didn't own R2- he was Padme's droid.

27. If you look at that scene in episode IV
when Obi Wan says "I don't seem to recall owning any droids.." Obi Wan kinda gives R2 this 'knowing' look, then R2 squeals something back. I was thinking maybe he didn't want Luke to know the whole story.

Or maybe I'm grasping at straws, but what the hell, whatever makes it make sense, right?

Which is true, R2 and 3PO are Anikan's.

5. iirc, he was mortally wounded by the emperor as he fell
he did die due to having his helmet removed, but he did so only because he was already mortally wounded.

then again, it's been many, many moons since epi.6....

7. Doesn't Vader's duds provide him with life support?
Edited on Sun May-22-05 01:07 AM by Nailzberg
I thought had more purpose than just the artsy black look.

Maybe that lighting damaged his suit, that and Luke chopping his hand off could have destroyed the suit's electronics?

Or I could be way off, I'm no expert. We'll have to wait until the truly devout Star Wars fans get home from the theater, get out of the costumes and makeup, and maybe they can fill us in.

Then again, who cares about accuracy? Lucas doesn't. I'm surprised he doesnt release a new edition Ep 6 where rather than dying, Vader, Luke, and Leia all go on Dr. Phil to reconnect.

11. two explanations.
The easiest is that Vader cannot live without his mask. Vader died because Luke took off his mask so that Vader could see his son with his own eyes.

The other speculative reason is that the emperor may have been helping to keep Vader alive, a power that was referred to in episode 3. Once the emperor died, Vader couldn't keep himself going.

12. Wow. Look what a little research will do!
"Palpatine unleashed a deadly barrage of dark side energy on the young Jedi. Lightning bolts spawned from pure evil tore into Luke's body with searing pain. Vader stood helplessly, watching his son writhe in agony from torture delivered by his master. Unable to watch anymore, Vader turned against his master. He grabbed a surprised Palpatine from behind, hoisted him above his head, and tossed his evil master down a bottomless reactor shaft. Vader was bombarded by the Emperor's Force lightning, mortally wounding him.

As he lay dying, Vader ceased to be. Anakin Skywalker returned. He asked his son to remove the cumbersome, fearsome mask that had concealed his face for decades. His mask and life support removed, Anakin looked upon Luke for the first and last time. He then died, his body disappearing into the light side of the Force. Luke burned the dark armor that had encased Anakin's crippled body in a quiet funeral pyre on the forest moon of Endor that night."

But, I don't remember him ever disappearing. Oh, well. :)

13. Well the suit was a life support type thing.
And the burst of electricity may have messed up the suit. So it stopped functioning.

and the removal of the helmet really did not cause it anymore, Vader said he was already to far gone before it was removed. He just wanted to look at Luke with his own eyes.

Since his suit was his life support, he died.

20. I haven't seen Return of the Jedi in a long time, but
it seems to me that when Vader picks up the emperor, the "electricity" coursing through the emperor starts coursing through Vader, too.

The emperor didn't have to aim it at him, because Vader was touching him.

it's melted in spots, meaning that Palpatine hit him with a great deal of energy.

22. Luke spent a long time kicking Vader's ass first
Remember the long ass fight?

By the time the Emperor zapped him, he was pretty weak.

I think the will to live left him too.

Vader was an old man and he had renounced the Dark Side.

It was time for him to go

44. Vader was only 45 in episode 6.
Hardly an old man. The thing that bothers me is that by this time Vader should have been the Emperor. He was more powerful than both Sidious and Yoda and would have taken over at some point by killing his master. Just wasn't in the script I guess.

23. Here's another answer.
The Emperor was toying with Luke, drawing out the agony rather than killing him instantly. When Vader turned on him, he let fly his real mojo.

The Emperor could have killed Luke quickly, too.
