Although it's only my personal belief that he played god in the film, I'm sure many will disagree.

19. How else would he know Maude was preggers with Dude Jr.?
He also commented that the Dude was "taking it easy for the rest of us sinners".

Even so, I'm not sure the Coen's even know. :)

2. Alanis committed the unpardonable sin of dating
Edited on Sat May-28-05 07:12 PM by deutsey

There's no way she could credibly play God after that.

8. Actually that increases her credibility . . . infinite mercy and pity
and all that.

What other movie "god" has performed that large of an act of charity? :)

3. Nancy Walker played God in the 70's.
I cant remember the movie though.
So I went with Morgan Freeman.

5. I personally had to go with Alanis
Mainly because the image of "God" standing on her head under a tree in a flower garden outside a church is just very appealing to me :).

6. Morgan Freeman
If I met God, I'd want him to be Morgan Freeman.

I didn't really understand the whole not-speaking thing in Dogma. Though Alanis captures a certain spirit I feel is there.

9. The not speaking thing is based on religious dogma which says
that any mortal who actually hears gods voice would be destroyed.

14. Who's dogma?
Does this come from Judaism? I had never heard of this before watching the movie.

21. Well, the whole movie was based on Catholic dogma, but
many religions teach that a mortal can't look upon or hear god without being destroyed.

26. I have to go with Freeman
I did not really like Bruce Almighty, although my sister claims I laughed all the way through.
Still, I like the God there better than the other two. She is too aloof and unapproachable in Dogma. Doesn't omnipotence include the ability to lower your voice?
George Burns god is a little too goofy and not very awe-inspiring. Card tricks and disappearing? Freeman would have done better in court.

Not just Jason Alexander, but the character of George Costanza, because it's so improbable. For that same reason I voted for George Burns.

loving, happy, silly, and according to Alan Rickman's character, very funny!
