"Don't buy tuna. They catch DOLPHINS in those nets." |
|
Yeah? What about the TUNA??
Why is it that cute animals are "worth more" than ugly animals...even to so-called animal activists?

11. I try to keep it to 2-3 cans a week. |
|
Yeah, I know that's more than they recommend, but I really do like the stuff (albacore only...no "chunk light" and such).
I buy it when the grocery store has it on sale, which accounts for the volume.

I have a fish market right around the corner that sells sushi-grade tuna steaks. They're great grilled.

2. You and your comment above are welcome at my house & while -- |
|
-- you're here, how about a cold beer, too?
Dolphins do seem to have the better PR campaign, but any animal trapped in a net is a trapped animal, whether it's a Hollywood dolphin or an anonymous tuna fish.
For some reason I flashed back to the snail darter, the tiny fish in Tennessee (?) whose habitat was preserved somewhere around the Carter administration (I think). It's been a while.
And I was in a convenience store this week and they were piping in The Carpenters' "Bless the Beasts & Children" -- not everyone's favorite composition, I realize -- but a worthy sentitment to be flooding people's ears.
Nice to see you on DU as always, MercutioATC. I really value your posts.

Good to see you, too. I don't know whether it's you or me, but it's been a while.
I just have to smile at people who get so worked up about these things because in almost every situation, it's "cute-based".
Hypothetical: You wake up to a large rat licking your face. Do you fling it against the wall? Would you do the same to a kitten licking your face?
I'm comfortable with my double standards, such as they are. Yes, I'd fling the rat and not the kitten, but I'm not trying to preach some animal equality gospel....

10. I've had pet rats and they're very cute & affectionate. |
|
So I'd probably treat the rat exactly the same as the cat. :)

13. I actually worked with a rat in a psych class in college that was great. |
|
We found out that he was going to be euthanized after the project, so we stole him and I kept him for about a year.
In that context (friendly lab rat that I'd taught to push a lever and ring a bell) you're right. I'd treat him the same way, too.

12. I hear you. The rat on my face thing is going to give me the creeps -- |
|
-- tonight when I go to bed...
But I'll get over it.
I'm kind of surprised that dolphins and wolves have such great PR karma. It seems like bears would have done a lot better, but we only allow cartoon bears to be cute and not real ones. Not sure why. The whole thing's skewed.
I've swum with wild dolphins who have come fairly near me when I'm in motion and right to me when I'm mostly still in the water. They don't seem"cute" really, but there's a sense that they know they're smarter than I am and are just being kind.
I'm allergic to tuna but eat other seafood "like I was goin' to the Chair," in Joe Nuxhall's memorable phrase. If you grill me a grouper, I will cut your grass for a year.

18. I think I understand the bear thing |
|
Bears are known to eat people.
Black bears shy away from people, but grizzlies and polar bears are ferocious predators with no fear of man. A polar bear would have no problem with slurping you down.
Wolves are just a big dog and dogs are cute and cuddly creatures, but a bear will fuck you up.

But it's that psychological thing.
Consider: there are hundreds of shark species swimming in the ocean and most of them are small animals. There are four sharks that will eat a person, and we're not their preferred food--they'd much rather have a seal than a person. But say the word shark to someone who doesn't do a lot of reading, and what did that person just hear? Man-eating shark.
Similarly, there are only a couple bears who like eating people--I think any of them would if the opportunity arose, but grizzlies and polars are the only ones who hunt for them--but to Joe Six-Pack, all bears eat people and like it.
Wolves would fuck you up as soon as look at you, but JSP sees one or hears the name and thinks "Rin Tin Tin!"

If you're ever in Evanston, IL, be sure to go to Davis Street Fish Market (market and restaurant). They have fantastic mahi-mahi.
