Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1936 mainly because Ethiopia defeated the Italian army in 1899 (I believe) and made Italy the laughing stock among the European colonialists. In 1936, the Italians invaded primarily for national pride reasons, but they still had to use mustard gas on a defenseless population to win. Basically, Mussolini felt having Italy's ass kicked by a third world army was far too embarrassing to bear
