1. It always depends
Remember, there are movies actually intended for the full-screen format.

However, if you mean pan'n scan DVDs, then you do have a point. Well, we don't have those over here :P .

3. Terrorists, terrorising the world of film...
By Ruining the carefully framed shots. Its an insult to the filmmakers unless the film itself was intended to be full screen (like The Shining).

10. NO! Most folks HATE "letterbox" they just are scared to admit it.
I have it on authority that Bush will only watch "letterbox." He escapes into films because he thinks that it connects him with the "average American" but he can't watch anything unless it's wide screen.

 I guess he has some "class" in that he is discriminating like you folks who are pushing that disgusting trash of "Letterbox/Wide Screen."

the way it was meant to be seen.

13. So because Bush likes something, it's "bad"?
He also loves peanut butter and honey sandwiches, which I love.

He loves Scottish Terriers, which I love.

I won't let Bush sully good things!

16. If you all like watching "teeny/weenie" characters with much vegetation
scroll across a very teeny screen...but are THRILLEd that you got the "Wide View" as opposed to the "UpClose Action/Dialog" view..then good for you.

As I said: Plasma TV's can really take advantage of "Letterbox" but the rest of us are looking at a maybe 10inch Screen with action that's irrelevant. Letterbox just Sucks...I can't stand to watch anything in it.

I wish there was a way to watch everything in "CINEMASCOPE" in a REAL THEATER...the WAY IT WAS MEANT TO BE WATCHED!

In absence of that....I'd rather watch the "Traditional."

21. No....I do have respect that's why "letterbox" annoy's me. These films
were meant to be seen on BIG SCREEN...our TV Screens (even the Plasma's, just can't do justice to many of these films where were panoramic in scope.

I do think the "old way" of focusing on the characters and dialog was the best compromise. With "letterbox" I feel I lose the characters and dialog because so much is sacrificed on small screen to give the "overview." In my mind it's not the best compromise but the worst of both world because you lose character and dialog interaction to be able to see the panoramic background...yet it's never large enough to duplicate the "in theater" experience.'

That's all I'm saying.

19. ...are gonna ruin it for the rest of us
Here's what will happen:

1) Freeper decides to enter the future of home entertainment (mainly because all the movies he likes come out first in DVD and maybe never in VHS).

2) Freeper buys $29 DVD player and a handful of DVDs from Wal-Mart.

3) Freeper gets pissed off because $29 DVD players don't have RF outputs, and his TV is so old it's got nothing but a 300-ohm antenna connector on it. Returns to Wal-Mart to buy an RF modulator and an A/B switch.

4) Freeper finally gets home and gets everything hooked up. He plops in his first DVD--he's decided to get all cultured and shit and play a foreign film from Austria featuring some actor he's never heard of before named Schwarzen-something. (His kid bails him out by looking at the case. "Oh, the Governator! Cool!")

5) Remember, he's already pissed. But now there's big black boxes across the top and bottom of the screen? This shit's going BACK!

6) Wal-Mart now has to RTV (return to vendor) this DVD player, PLUS a stack of DVDs, PLUS the same thing brought back by 200 other freepers who don't like letterbox movies.

7) The RTV manager in Bentonville notices all of the RTVs on DVD players and DVDs. She does a study and learns that the main reason Wal-Mart customers return DVD players and DVDs is that they don't like letterboxing. She informs the DVD global product merchant.

8) The DVD buyer calls the DVD makers and informs them that Wal-Mart will no longer accept letterboxed DVDs.

9) Inventory control at the DVD makers says it's too expensive to track two SKUs, one for letterbox and one for pan/scan, and since their most important account is pan/scan only they're dropping letterbox.

10) All y'all with 54-inch Pioneer plasmas you paid $11,000 for get to watch your new movies with black bars running up the side...and as you sit and look at about $2500 worth of screen real estate that Wal-Mart just made worthless, you call your travel agent with the Question of the Day: If I want to fly to Bentonville, Arkansas, and leave a bag of burning dog shit on the front stoop at Wal-Mart headquarters, do I have to get my dog shit in Arkansas, or can I bring it with me on the plane?

Letterbox looks fine on my tv, and it's only 25" and not even one of the newer flattish sort of CRT tvs.
