while grilling is cooking with a hotter fire for a shorter period. I know it's not the best definition in the world but off the top of my head those are the basic differences.
and I'm grilling burgers as we speak.

BBQ'ing takes hours and hours.
Grilling takes 15 min. depending on what you are cooking.

like when most people have cook-outs in their backyard. It usually cooks in a relatively quick amount of time. BBQ is an actual style of cooking usually involving inexpensive cuts of meat that are treated w/ a wet or dry rub and are slow cooked over wood chips for a number of hours until the meat is very tender.
I live in KC. We're known for our BBQ.
