If it's a noun, it's hy-fin-it; if it's a verb, it's hy-fin-ate. In the case of my screen name, it's a noun. :)
It also isn't relative to grammar. A "hyphenate" is a person with multiple hats--in my particular case, working in the television industry, it was an above-the-line designation for someone who is carrying multiple titles, such as director-producer, writer-director, etc.
