I have to put my dog down today
She ran out of the house and in front of a car yesterday. She's not a small dog and made a big thump as the car just kept driving on-they didn't even slow down. Yesterday she seemed fine. Today she will not stand and will not use the bathroom. I can't afford to do very much for her so I have the feeling that I will have to put her down. I guess I'll find out at 10 am.

8. She is really bad about running out whenever the door opens.
I knew it was going to happen sooner or later. The worst part is that it's not really my dog-it's my daughters. She's at her first day of summer school right now and doesn't know that the dog is going to the vet today.

32. She'll be ok in the long run.
We all know that is part of having a pet-learning about death. Sooner or later it will happen to every living creature. She has to learn that. Right now she is convinced that death is funny (ala cartoon death) and that they come right back. Sad way for her to learn it but at least it's a natural way.

will be able to help out without having to use that option. I can't believe drivers that won't stop to check out the dog. What an absolute asshole. That really pisses me off. Piece of shit is what he/she is. :grr: I hope all works out!

9. I hope so too.
Four other cars stopped immediately and got out to check on her. That car kept driving. I called the police. There's not alot that they can do but someone "accidently" slipped me the owners info from the license plate. I plan on paying them a visit. They were speeding in an area with alot of children playing. It could have been a kid instead.

27. You are exactly right. It is a good thing
it wasn't a kid. But I am sad that it was your dog. Be careful when you visit them (take someone with you), but don't back down. I would also take the bills. You have witnesses, so it can be proven they were at fault. I know your dog probably should have been leashed, but they were speeding and they didn't stop. They should have stopped because like you said it could've been a child. Says a lot about someone's character.

33. I don't worry too much about taking someone w/ me.
I know how to handle myself. Anyone that I could take w/ me would probably make the situation worse-even some of the officers I work w/. One of them would gladly go off-duty and probably get mouthy w/ them.
I am taking the bills w/ me. I can take them to small claims court since an animal is property, if need be. They need to learn their lesson.

It's her first day of summer school-so that she can get used to going to school all day long in the fall. Actually, she's the one who let the dog run out so this will not be fun at all.

35. Beagles = escape artists
Not your daughter's fault - if a beagle wants out, it gets out. My parents are both absolutely obsessive about security and keeping the dogs inside, and their beagle escaped all the time and ran amok.

Hope all turns out okay for you and your family.

And I don't want to waste the time and resources of the vet when he is a good person who does so much for our community-many times for free. If there is little hope then I do not want to push it. I want him to focus on those who can get well, not on those who don't have much of a chance.
And she has had bladder and kidney problems this past year. It just might be her time to go.

Edited on Thu Jun-02-05 09:17 AM by livetohike
We had a dog that was hit by a car. He broke his shoulder - the vet said he could operate for $1000, or let him heal on his own. Ranger was nine then and we didn't want him to go under the anesthesia, so we let him heal on his own. He lived to be 16 and had no bad effects from the break.

67. I'll be in the room w/ her.
I'm the only one in this family who seems to be able to handle it. The vet will have me hold her-it's what he did when I put my cat down a few years ago (too many injuries from a cat fight-she ran off and got into a fight. I couldn't find her for three days. When I found her she had been torn up pretty badly and was in kidney failure from the infections in her bloodstream). So at least I know the routine.
I dug out a place in the backyard for her early this morning before my daughter woke up. Everything is ready. I would have preferred to cremate her but I just don't have the money right now. At least she has a little spot under a tree waiting for her.

If you want to donate to someone donate the $10 to the Humane Society. She was originally found stuck in a barb wire fence-that's how I got her in the first place. She has had a good life w/ me. Donate it to them so that they can help other animals.
I'm taking her food, her toys and her pull-ups (yes, she has had to wear pull-ups to bed for the last year-kidney and bladder problems at night) to the Humane Society along w/ her food dish so that maybe they can use them for other animals.
