How can you not "get" Bjork?
I'm in love with hger singing. And my family thinks I'm crazy. I'll put on anything from "Birthday" with the Sugarcubes to "Aurora" from Vespertine and they still don't understand her genius. Any other Bjork sufferers out tthere? I get endless shit for liking her.

1. You have to listen to one of her albums three times.
Edited on Fri Jun-03-05 08:33 PM by brainshrub
Anyone who doesn't think Bjork is a genius, do this:

1) Buy one of her albums. (Not just one song. "Homogenic" is a good start.)

2) Listen to it 3 times from start to finish. (Maybe not in the same day, but don't pass judgment until you've done this seriously.)

3. direct the faithless as follows...
Army Of Me ~

stand up
you've got to manage
i won't sympathize
anymore

and if you complain once more
you'll meet an army of me

you're allright
there's nothing wrong
self-sufficience please!
and get to work

and if you complain once more
you'll meet an army of me

you're on your own now
we won't save you
your rescue-squad

and if you complain once more
you'll meet an army of me

4. if you like Bjork's singing you should check out the Mars Volta
the instrumentation might not be your thing but Cedric Bixler has a voice.. . . wow. perhaps you've heard them.

Another band I love and my kids HATE! They don't appreciate the subtlety of it. The refer to subtlety as boring. They'll learn. Bill Evans is boring, too!

7. Fantastico!
The current mix (all day I guess) is
Joe Jackson (Body & Soul, Blaze of Glory)
Elvis (North)
Bjork (Debut, Medulla)
they just keep spinning round and round to my pleasure.

8. I like her creativity, but.....
....she can't hold a candle to Kate Bush, or even early Tori Amos for that matter, in terms of melding the music to truly compelling emotional issues.

She's crafted an engaging presence, but I'm not sold on her depth. I think she's just weird for the sake of being weird. A Yoko Ono for the New Century.

11. Here's what I really feel
My wife was looking over my shoulders when I last posted. I think she has one of the sexiest voices I've ever heard. Her voice touches my soul. I know it sounds corny, but when I hear her growl, like on songs like "Birthday" it does something to me. And I don't find her particularly attractive. But her voice. Wow!

15. That's not corny.
But I think it does RHYME with corny.....

But seriously, her voice is a force of nature. One of these days she's going to put the whole thing together. She has a "Dreaming" or an "Under the Pink" in her, she just hasn't melded all of the elements yet. She fascinates me, but she doesn't move me.

But I hear what you're saying, and respect that. Kate Bush does the same thing for me.

16. Have you ever listened to Jonatha Brooke?
I have all her albums. She really moves me lyric-wise. And I saw herlive about a year ago--one of the best concerts I've ever seen. Now that woman can touch your soul.

22. Jonatha Brooke is quite good, at least what I've heard.
But I haven't heard enough of her to really make a call. I like what I've come across, though. Guess I need to check her out a little more.

For sheer emotional passion, nobody can beat Patty Griffin, IMO. That woman just lays her soul out naked for everyone to see. Her stuff just amazes me. She's more in the Americana vein, but her songs speak to truth like no others.

Loreena McKennitt is also good for emotional, conceptual stuff.

28. "The Dreaming" is an album by Kate Bush.
Came out around 1982 or so. Extremely conceptual and difficult, it was a sonic landscape of surreal imagery and intense depth. Considered by fans to be Kate's seminal work.

"Under the Pink" was Tori Amo's "Dreaming". Stark and disturbing, Tori created some challenging music.

I recommend both if you're a Bjork fan. You'll like them both.

I call Tori Amos, Kate Bush and Bjork the Wyrd Sisters. Love all three of them to pieces.

Whatever happened to Kate Bush, anyway? :(

36. Kate "retired" a ways back.
She settled into family life and seems to have left the music scene completely behind. Fansites have swirled rumors for years about a Kate "comeback", but to my knowledge it's all uncorroborated. My guess is that she's happy and content and the creative fires no longer burn.

There's a book that I want to buy called "Waiting for Kate Bush", it's part fiction and part fan tribute. Looks like that's going to have to sate my Kate fetish in leiu of new material from her.
