Today's animal count while hiking:
When I hike, I love checking out the wildlife and I really need to get me a digital camera so I can get some great shots.

Today I saw:

12 toads (they were so cute and adorable)
2 snakes (nothing poisonous - snakes don't bug me a bit)
3 rabbits
8 turtles working on their suntan
and one absol-fucking-lutely beautiful Blue Heron. I so wish I had my camera - this things are so majestic. I got real close to him and I watched him for about 30 minutes until finally he found some lunch to snack on and flew away.

This is what Herons look like:

2. I enjoy watching
the wildlife when I walk too....and my wife has made it a real hobby.

Presently when she walks through the wooded area near our home, she regularly encounters three deer. Two young ones and a Mom....they are used to seeing her walk through the woods now and won't run when she comes by...they just stand and watch.

She also had a very interesting encounter with a bald eagle a year ago....it stalked her....she only weighs 92 lbs so the eagle was probably deciding if she was small enough.

It's great that we are privileged to visit the wildlife in their world every once in a while...

btw: blue herons are beautiful.

3. I love hiking
I usually go to the Olympic Mountains (although sometimes to the Cascades).

I visited Vancouver BC recently--I was amazed that the city park had blue herons. They are somethin to see.

5. Blue herons are among the most beautiful creetches on the planet.
Mrs. V. calls them Ichabod. Ichabod Heron. We're fortunate to see them all the time.

Sounds like a fabulous walk, Lynne.

7. That's the one nice thing about Texas.
We have herons. Lots of herons. That Great Blue Heron in the picture is from a photographer at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Here are the other ones...

8. I agree they are magnificent birds........
As long as you don't have a pond with Koi. I have a Great Blue Heron that migrates through here every year and the first couple of years, he got some of my fish. Finally figured out a way to keep him out of my pond and eating my fish.

I actually have a picture of him in silhouette on the roof of my house. Someday I'll post the picture when I figure out how!
