My mom and sis are in New Orleans!
Any recommendations for hot spots for them to see?!??!?!

They want to go to more of the scenic, historical parts and then to get some really good food. They're not really into the bar/club scene.
But what should they see while down in the N-O!?

1. They HAVE to do the haunted history tour of the cemetary!
Tell them to do this:

Haunted History Tours!
These are the tours you've heard about! As seen on A&E, Discovery, Fox Network, The History Channel, MTV, Sci Fi, and RECOMMENDED by The Travel Channel as ..."The #1 Tour In New Orleans!"
MAKE NO MISTAKE! - If it doesn't say "The Original..." - IT ISN'T! - Haunted History Tours...The original Ghost, Vampire, Voodoo, Cemetery, Witchcraft, and Garden District Tours! This is the company with the best selling book, "Journey Into Darkness...Ghosts & Vampires of New Orleans." This is the company with the chilling video documentary, "Journey Into Darkness...The Trilogy" (Ghosts-Voodoo-Vampires). This is the company with the reputation that makes these tours a MUST DO for anyone visiting New Orleans! - Mildly theatrical, hugely historical, and thoroughly entertaining, Haunted History offers a variety of daily and nightly tours that will leave you...SPELLBOUND!

3. Sights/eateries
There's the Napoleon House restauraunt (historic landmark) on Chartres Street. Prices there are decent.

Port of Call on Esplanade Avenue (right outside of the Quarter) is decent too.

If you board the streetcar at Canal Street and Carondelet, you can go all the way down St. Charles avenue, through part of the Garden District.

Check out the cemeteries too (but not at night). You can take the streetcar up Canal street to City Park Avenue and that will put you right at some large cemeteries.

5. For a killer po'boy
ACME OYSTER BAR (not a drink bar). Best fried oyster po'boys in town.

6. Port of Call...
...has some killer burgers; it's their claim to fame.

I have a friend who used to work there and called it "Burgatory" while he was there. He got tired of smelling them, but will still admit they were the bomb.

8. Finding great food...
...in NOLA isn't hard. Let's put it this way: the city has a highway named after a chef, so you know they are serious about enjoying their eats. There are tons of good places to eat. Tell them to ask the locals and they'll be glad to steer them to a good spot according to what they're in the mood for.

My advice would be to walk around the Quarter during the afternoon, and don't give it's nightlife too much credence. The Vieux Carre is much better in daylight when the tourists are sedate and the amateur drinkers are elsewhere. Good bookshops, galleries and cafes abound. The French Market's not bad if you bring a discerning eye.

They can also find entertainment guides to help out with the night's activities. As far as music, I can only tell you about the jazz venues. For traditional jazz, Palm Court Cafe on Decatur is good. For straight-ahead jazz, try Snug Harbor by Checkpoint Charlie's just across Esplanade from the Quarter. Sweet Lorraine's sometimes has good artists, too. For more modern stuff, The Funky Butt is good, but be careful as it's on Rampart near a seedy section of town.

11. Also
The Maple Street Bar is a good pace to visit for jazz, but a little far from the quarter (bout a $10 cab ride each way). Next door is Jachimo's, probably one of the top 10 restaurants in the city. Meals run about $20-25/person w/o liquor.

If they are interested, there are supposed to be some really good tours of antebellum homes. A lot of people like a riverboat ride... etc.

If they are into sailing and will be around Wednesday nite, meet up at the New Orleans Yacht Club bar (just show up) and ask to go out with one of the "easy cruisers". Brign a six pack. This is racing season, and Wed night is the practice race for a lot of the hard core racers, and just a fun time to hang out for everyone else.
