"I snuck out of the house." I say "snuck" all of the time.
Is "gotten" a word? I say that, too.
"I hung out with him for awhile." Wouldn't proper English be "I hanged out with him for awhile?"
I used to say "I hooked up with them at the restaurant," until I found out that today's youngsters say "hooked up" when they mean "had sex/oral sex with."
What grammar rules to you obliterate, even though you know it's improper usage?

could never figure out when which was appropriate - or is rung only a thing on a ladder and we just think that it is a form of ring?

5. So true. I have an good friend who's receiving her doctorate in English. |
|
God help her--I love her, but can't stand to have her correct my grammar when I'm lettin' loose with a bunch of friends.
I speak perfect grammar when I lecture. When I walk out of the classroom, I revert to a good ol' southern girl. :D

though I don't slip into full hoosier mode - while though I was raised here - my parents were eastern transplants - and I have been in and out of the state for the past 20 years.. Sorta watered down the full hoosier effect (where single vowels are drawn out to two syllables - and grammar can be butchered beyond belief.) Never the less - do have some of the effects - but they disappear when I am "on stage" so to speak.

4. no no, that's not what today's youngsters' hooked up means.... |
|

it can also mean you just kissed. usually hooked up means you either kissed, or did anything BUT sex.

6. Well thanks for the correction! |

At least I won't freak out the first time that my son tells me that he hooked up with so-and-so.

9. No, ma'am, "snuck" is bad English. Period. |
|
Edited on Sun Jun-12-05 12:36 AM by Redstone
Just like "busted" when you mean "broken." I swear, I saw a FRONT PAGE newspaper article a while back that mentioned a car that had a "busted headlight." AAARRGGH!
"Hung out with him" is absolutely proper English. "Hanged out with him" is dead wrong, so you're fine on that one.
Any other subjects of grammar, usage, or spelling that you want me to be a picky pain in the ass about, you just let me know.
