I think all the Tom Cruise 'acting' bashers need to watch Born on the 4th
of July, if not again, then at least once.

I'm tired of his acting skills being associated with his beliefs. First of all, he's not that bad of an actor. It might be trendy and DU'ey to gang up and say he is, but he's not that bad an actor.

Secondly, all this ganging up on person du jour is some fucking lame ass bullshit that any old lamer can join. If you've got a beef with his acting then fine, but the way "The lounge" as if it needed any less credibility, gangs up on today's flavor is so damn lame and ridiculous I'm surprised it hasn't been nuked as a forum in its entirety.

Thinking for yourself and questioning authority is one thing, ganging up on Tom Cruise is just fucking lame. It's easy to be selective, it's the Republican way.

1. He did great in that movie
But name one other movie he was in where he didn't play the same fucking role; the perpetual smiling all-American pretty boy.

But the frog part was a bit much, I thought.

And I forgot to say I agree about Born on the 4th of July.

It's one of those great movies that a lot of people have never seen.

That's probably my favorite Tom Cruise movie..and Jamie got nominated for supporting actor.

8. He epitomized insecure adolescence in "Risky Business"
Any smiling he did in that film was offset by genuine teen angst.

I don't dump on him for his beliefs. I dump on him because he has simply been 'phoning in' his performances for 20 years. The fact that he was so very good in "4th" is even more reason to criticise him; because he has proven himself to be capable of a great performance but just so seldom delivers one.

on edit: he was good in Magnolia and Interview with the Vampire, too... big deal, three movies out of 200+.

4. He is good in that film
He also befriended Ron Kovic, and got the word out about his experience after the war.

Me... I still have a soft spot for "Risky Business", which came out when I was 16. It holds up far better and smarter than any 80's teen sex comedy.

I think Scientology is unadulterated bullshit, but I am an actor, and I can evaluate the craft objectively.

13. What if,
I don't think he is a good actor, or a bad actor. What if I don't care that he belongs to some crazy realigion. What if I just do not like him? As a person. How he talks, how he looks. Just don't like him.

Is that OK with you? :P

23. This "phenomenon" is really complex...
...and I can't speak for other people, but here are a few thoughts:

Tom's comments RE: Brooke Shields. Very ill-advised, none of his fucking business. She slapped him back. He had it coming.

Tom's Scientology Soapbox. Hey, I'm a Christian, and I can't even count the Jesus threads I've seen in the year and a half on DU that go against everything I believe in. BUT...freedom of speech. Scientology is very, very controversial, and Cruise is very, very, vocal, which...for a public figure...is like painting a bulls-eye on your back.

I don;t care if he's straight, gay, bisexual, bi-curious, impotent, a hermaphrodite, or a eunuch. I could give a rat's ass about his sexuality, or the sexuality of any other human being for that matter. It's none of my business, and if I post a Tom Cruise thread, "it ain't 'cause I think he's gay." Who GIVES a fuck.

As an actor? "Cocktail" SUCKS. "The Firm" ROCKS. Everything else he's done falls at one end of the spectrum, or the other, or in between. I'm not bashing "The Actor Tom Cruise."

The "I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO in love" / Oprah crap? Good for him. Hopefully, once he gets it out of his system, he'll STFU.

Maybe if he stepped back and kept his personal life personal for a while, people would stop bashing him. He lives in a bubble. He's grown accustomed to too many people kissing his ass. His former manager struck a balance between the "public" Cruise and the "private" Cruise. He fired her and hired his sister, and now he says whatever he wants whenever he wants, and guess what? Many of the people who hear what he has to say wish he would STFU, like the "old" Tom Cruise.

And here's a SERIOUS question. REALLY.

How do we KNOW...I mean REALLY, REALLY KNOW...that the guy who squirted him with the fake microphone wasn't on the Tom Cruise payroll? I don't mean to go tinfoil hat on this, but...

HOW...DO...WE...KNOW...that Cruise didn't orchestrate that little publicity stunt himself? Beyond the shadow of a doubt, WHY do we believe he was a "victim?"

:toast:

I have never had a problem with some of his better films
like "Rain Man", he does fine in, even though Dustin Hoffman steals the show.

Born on the Fourth was good. He was even pretty good in "Collateral"
