Speaking of Promise Keepers: How many of us know one? |
|
My brother-in-law, Ross, is a Promise Keeper. I love him dearly, and strangely enough he adores me. Kathy and I are the only acceptable gay people on the planet (and maybe my best friend Dale, and Sean Hayes, too, maybe, because I used to know him and Ross met him before he was "just Jack"). But all other gays are going to hell, and all the other PK stuff applies. Ross buys it lock, stock & barrel, always has. He really found his niche when PKs came along.
Oh, and his wife? My sister? An atheist. :smoke:
Anyone else know a PK?

3. My promise keeper story. |
|
Our homeowner's association was raped, figurately speaking, by a lawyer-developer and the experience left me so stunned that I canvased newspapers and public records to gather information on him to try and make sense of it all. His name came up in an article about the Promise Keepers. He was a member and he was quoted as saying that he was drawn to P.K. to get relief from the pressure that society places on men. According to him, men are required to act strong and not show their feelings or weaknesses in our society, and Promise Keepers gave him an opportunity to bond with other men that were dealing with the same mixed emotions.
I took an instant dislike for Promise Keepers, because I know first hand the damage that their followers are doing in "real life" and after they have screwed people over, they run to their peers for absolution. All it's doing is allowing bastards to vindicate other bastards like them, when who they should really be asking for forgiveness are the innocent people outside that they wronged.

One is my brother in law who is not a bad guy for a right winger. My sister is right there with him which puzzles the hell out of me because she was a peace corp volunteer. She now works for a church that sends missionaries to africa in order to convert folks to christianity to save them from aids! Yes it really is as nutty as it sounds.
The second is a guy I work with who again is a pretty decent guy, but we don't talk politics so he could be a closeted right wing loonie for all I know.

7. Bertha, one of my uncles is a PK |
|
When he was young he was all about having a good time, but in a moderate way: playing sports, picking up girls, hanging out with his buddies. I don't believe he ever had a problem with drugs or alcohol or anything like that, and I don't think he's quite old enough to have gone through a midlife crisis either, but some years back he had some sort of religious meltdown and found Jesus bigtime. Now no family gathering is complete without him launching into a solemn prayer or showing off the loveable "I love Jesus" antics of his young son.
Apart from that -- and I'm probably more bothered by it than anyone else, mainly because I've always found such displays to be hypocritically ostentatious regardless of the sincerity of the performer -- he and his wife don't make any effort to impose their religion on any one else in the family, nor do they express their political opinions, so I have no idea how they feel about liberals, conservatives, or the deeds of the current administration.
I'm curious to know, how well do your sister and your brother-in-law get along? It seems to me that it must be a considerable source of friction in the marriage when one partner has to be gravely concerned that their spouse has a good chance of spending eternity in the Hot Place.

he was brought in to the company I used to work for as a "consultant" to do a "turnaround". He was one of the reasons I left.
The owner/CEO used the cover of a "christian consultant" to take draconian measures against the sales staff and dealership network. As a result (only 9 months later) there is no sales staff and the dealership network is less than 50% the number he started with.
You know those "Men of Integrity hats and polo shirts they wear? False f-ing advertising!
