1. There is a WKRC
But no, it's nothing like Arthur Carlson's station. Cincinnati is a town full of glaring contradictions and sad stories.

2. WKRC, Channel 12. CBS affiliate.
The similarities end at the first three call letters, as far as I know, but even WKRC surely employs philandering, poorly-dressed ad-time salesmen.

Livin' on the air in Cincinnati,
Jennifer

3. I used to watch channel 12 when I visited relatives in Dayton
Is that the station where they had some kind of hostage situation on live tv? Or was that channel 9? This was several years ago, not sure exactly how long ago.

4. That was WCPO, Channel 9.
Happened in 1980. Back then (when "WKRP in Cincinnati" was on the air), WCPO was the CBS affiliate, and WKRC was the ABC affiliate.

The gunman eventually took his own life.

I am far, far too young to remember this myself, }( , here's the best link I could find:

5. Not to encourage this thread, but...
...there's only one reason I watch WCPO:

6. There's a downside to everything, Paragon.
If you watch WCPO for this:

You still have to suffer through this:

8. Damn! 1980?
Edited on Sat Nov-01-03 02:06 AM by syrinx9999
I thought it was MUCH more recent, like '93 or something. I guess I remember my uncle telling me about it years later.

on edit: forgot "it"

7. Nope, Carlos, nor did it ever.
Nor was there ever anything even remotely like it. I grew up near Cincinnati; I was born in 1964 and was only out of the area for a few years in the early 80s and moved away for good in 1997. Every commercial radio station in the place has been run by Freepers since I was old enough to understand what a wingnut was. Sorry to burst your bubble, but even the one FM station in town that was originally fairly atavistic (when it comes to the 'rules') became Jacor, which sold out to Clear Channel ... and frankly, they were even more freaking vicious about beating the everloving hell out of their competition than Clear Channel is. They waged war on individuality in Cincinnati, and they won. It no longer exists on the radio in Cinci, except for 88.3 WAIF-FM, which is a listener-funded independent station.

10. There's always WOXY-FM.
97-X... BAM!... the future of rock-n-roll.

:-) It's in Oxford, of course, but it's not hard to tune in while in Cincy.

Radio sucks in just about every town, doesn't it? Isn't it all corporate-owned and manipulated now? I worked in radio for a minute or two, and my father has spent his life in it. The whole situation, nation-wide is a damned shame, and a disservice to music lovers everywhere. I gave up on radio long, long ago, and thank the heavens for providing in-dash CD players.

"And the radio is in the hand of such a lot of fools
Trying to anesthetize the way that you feel"

- Elvis Costello, a long, long time ago...

14. I worked for a 250-Watt daytimer in the 70's...
We had a cute blond for receptionist ( I used to blow-dry her hair on Saturday mornings. That ALMOST made the low pay worth-while)
a dense-as-walnut GM, Herb Tarlek, Cows under the antenna....

WKRP was one of my favourite shows, because I could RELATE to it!

12. Those actual call letters once belonged to a station in Georgia
Now the TV show was absolutely drawn from real life. Except for the constant stream of profanity and the inescapable air monitor that one would encounter in an actual radio station, WKRP In Cincinnati was bang on. Hugh Wilson MUST have spent some years in radio.

I have worked with some real-life equivalents of the characters: Jim Cassidy, Larry O'Jay, Ken Dennis and Debbie Dollar, to name but a few!

13. eh, who cares about that

Loni Anderson. That's all that matter about that show. Ok, the Johnny character was a lot of fun too.
