Torre to Steinbrenner: "Shaddap, you."
Torre Tells His Boss to Stop Meddling
By TYLER KEPNER

Published: November 1, 2003

Yankees Manager Joe Torre has a message for George Steinbrenner: Be quiet. Or, perhaps more delicately, be supportive. Steinbrenner, the team's principal owner, invited Torre to the team's organizational meetings this week in Tampa, Fla. Torre said he used the setting to make a point to his boss.

"I talked about some of the things I didn't appreciate, as far as some of the statements and things that went on all year," Torre said during a conference call yesterday, speaking publicly for the first time since last Saturday, the night the Yankees lost the World Series to the Florida Marlins. "It was basically a one-sided conversation. The fact is I said something I needed to say and did it, I'd like to believe, in a diplomatic way."

Whenever he was asked about Steinbrenner during the season, Torre would say that the only difference was the meddling was more public this season. One of Torre's greatest strengths as a manager has been keeping distractions out of the clubhouse, but Steinbrenner's jabs made that harder than ever.

3. I don't know much about baseball
but I do need to put in a good word for George Steinbrenner.

Two years ago while Katherine Harris was still Sec of State in Florida, she tried to shut down the Florida Folk Festival which as been an annual event in Florida for over 50 years. Miss Historian cut the entire budget and staff for this event and didn't think anyone would notice. However, there is a small but diehard community of folk music lovers here in Florida and we know how to raise hell. Well, when Steinbrenner got wind of what was happening, he turned around and wrote a personal check for $70,000 to keep the festival going. He asked for nothing in return and we still have no clue what really motivated his generosity. Like I said, I don't know much about baseball, but anyone who loves and supports folk music in this way is okay in my book.

7. check out WUMB
we have a great folk station in the boston area that you can listen to on the web ... the url is: www.wumb.org ...

in boston, it's on 91.9 fm ...

the station's a little different on the weekends in that they tend to have more specialized music (e.g. irish music) ...

but during the week, it's just great ...

give it a listen ...

11. Fixed link
Sorry about that.

And apologies to Will for hijacking his thread. Who would think you could go from baseball to folk music in just 3 posts.

12. the fact that he told off Steinbrenner
and wasn't given the old pink slip, shows that Joe Torre is one hell of a person. Playing for the Yankees is hard enough, imagine aving Steinbrenner breathing down your neck--on a GOOD day!

BUT, I expect that asshole Steinbrenner to make this offseson and next year even more difficult :argh:
